Welcome to our little kitty help page.
Tim and I began helping the cats that are dumped near our property three years ago. There is no one else around to help them. We started by keeping the garage door open a small bit so they can come in out of the cold. Over the past three years, we have had multiple cats appear on our property as our quiet, woodsy road is ideal for people to dump their unwanted kitties.
This summer, two females were dumped in the area. Both were scared and both were unspayed. There is a wild, unneutered male in our woods that we have not been able to catch, so of course, both girls became pregnant.
Each cat that appears, we have to slowly acclimate to people, contact, touch, and love. We let them figure this out on their own schedule. They get rotisserie chicken, kibble, and milk. We try hard to help each cat learn to love people because when they arrive on our property, they are very scared of people.

We found one rescue to take one of the females and her litter. She was fairly friendly and allowed us to handle the kittens immediately, so they will be able to be adopted into regular homes.

So we have Wwana and her litter of four kittens growing up with our neutered male, Mwana, and wild Bootsies. Mwana came to us two years ago from the same situation. Mom was dumped on our road, unspayed, quickly got pregnant, and had Mwana and one other kitten. We got them all fixed and adopted the mom and one kitten. We have kept Mwana as our resident mouser. Wild Bootsie was dumped 2-3 years ago. He has chosen to not get caught or come near us. Over the last year, he has started coming in for food and shelter, and we can now talk to him without him running away. As soon as possible, we will get Bootsie neutered.

We didn’t want cats (two dogs is more than enough for our budget) nor do we have the money for cats, but they are here and need our help, so that is what we are doing. I have called and emailed over 30 rescues in the Washington DC/Maryland/West Virginia area but have not been able to get enough and continued help. So, I’m hoping the community can help us a little so we can get these kitties homes and veterinary care.

Just after Christmas, we got three of the kittens neutered. The mom and the final kitten will be fixed on January 30. During these appointments, each cat also got their rabies and feline leukemia shots. These costs, again, are way beyond our budget, and during the winter, it is a real struggle for us as this is also my slow period for my art business.

I hope that some of you can help us take care of these bills and maybe even help us find the kittens a barn home of their own.

Here are our bills so far:
Cat neutered with rabies and leukemia shots
$120 each (3 done plus two more scheduled $600)
Gas to get to vet clinic twice
$50
Food for the past 6 months
$300
2 cat carriers from Walmart
$50
Neuter for Bootsies once we can catch him
$120
Total: $1120
We also expect that the cat dumps are going to continue to happen, so we are trying to build a fund so that as soon as cats appear, we can get them fixed immediately from now on.

We hope to find homes for the kittens. We will keep the mom, Wwana, as she has made great strides to finally trust us, and we even hope to have her inside by next year. But trying to keep all the kittens is too much for us financially and is a very hard drain on the bird population on our farm. Two cats are plenty to keep down rodents, but six cats are way too many. These cats are ideal as barn cats. We couldn’t get contact with them until they were at least three months old, so unless you are super cat savvy, they are best as fully outdoor cats.

I really hope that you can support us in some small way.
