My name is Hayley Johnson and I am raising money to help my boyfriend's mom, Becky, pay for her dog Blu's surgery and possible chemotherapy.
Blu is spoiled with hikes, swimming, walks, and a lot of outdoor activities. Blu had developed a small lump at the end of this summer, which they thought was just a bump from a thick thorn they had removed after hiking, because it had swollen and turned red after the thorn had been taken out. The lump had initially gone away, but recently had come back. Becky brought Blu to the vet and paid almost $700 dollars for this initial visit. Because they needed to do testing, a biopsy of the lump had to be performed. She got the phone call last night that the biopsy of the lump was positive for cancer. They have to do further testing to find out what Stage Grade the cancer is. Becky was told that the estimated cost could be anywhere from $2,000 - $10,000.
Blu's birthday is April 1st, and he will be 6 years old. He is an American Pitbull that was Becky's second rescue from Alabama and has become an important emotional support resource for her, as most of her family is gone. He was rescued on July 30, 2020 from a detrimental situation. He was in his second home, which was supposed to be a good place, but ended up being an abuse situation. He was severely emaciated and had to have surgery to have small pieces of plastic removed from his intestines because dogs will eat anything to fill the void in their stomach. Being only a baby puppy, at 3 months old, when he was rescued, he has to have all grain-free foods and treats and is very prone to skin allergies from his poor treatment and lack of care as a baby.
I met Blu when I started dating Becky's son, Anthony, in early 2024, and he was undoubtably the sweetest dog I have ever met. You could clearly see the bond between Becky and Blu and the family. I have truly never seen anything like it. Blu is Becky's soul dog. Becky is one of the biggest dog lovers I know and she would do absolutely anything in her power for her dogs.
I am creating this for her because I have watched her struggle this year while trying incredibly hard to keep up with everything that has gone wrong. She has another dog, Harley, who is going to be 8. She is also a rescue from Alabama that Becky rescued a year prior to Blu, but has had since she was 8 months old. They are an incredibly bonded pair, Blu and Harley. Becky has always been a responsible pet owner and has always paid for all of their vet care including a surgery Harley had to have a few years ago and any treatments in between, besides regular care. She works full-time and has raised both of her kids on her own with no outside help. This year alone, she has had some incredible struggles that no mom should ever have to go through. She has been supporting and taking care of a very close family member that is struggling with addiction and that has taken an immense toll on her financially and emotionally. For the first time, I have heard her complain that she has no safety net left over after being financially drained this entire last year trying to help keep her family afloat, while also keeping up with her daily responsibilities (Mortgage, Groceries, dogs, etc.) She has been trying to figure this out on her own but her pride gets in the way as she has a hard time asking for help. I have never seen anyone work so hard and give so much and get so little in return, but continue to help anyone she can, including animals. She plays games such as, Treat, the online game that donates meals and treats to shelter dogs by just playing. She donates to Chewy any time she has anything left over, while going without her own needs. I have seen her walk other peoples dogs, give other dogs food, put sweaters on dogs that have been left outside in the cold, and give water to dogs who she has driven by, chained outside in the grass with no water bowl.
Watching Becky's struggles in the last year, and seeing how close her bond is with both of her dogs, especially Blu, I wanted to try to ease her heart and help her financially with this struggle because she doesn't know how she is going to do this on her own. Also, because she has given so much to other animals, she deserves to have Blu around longer to continue enjoying their bond and unconditional love.
