Everyone: Meet Benny. He’s forty pounds of fur, affection, and attitude. I rescued him from a bad situation years ago, and he’s been happy with me ever since (and even though he’s trouble sometimes, I’m happy with him, too). In March of 2020, Benny got sick.
The technical term for what he had is “perianal fistula”; imagine the worst pimple you’ve ever had, right at the most sensitive spot on your body. Just the act of going outside to do his business hurt him. We thought it was under control. But…
…cue last week. At a checkup, the vet discovered a mass in his anal gland. He had surgery to remove it and, thankfully, it was benign. Right now, he’s recovering, but he will be on medications for his fistula for months, at the very least.
Being the good dog-mom I am, I got him pet insurance when I adopted him. It has covered some of the costs, but there’s a lot left to pay out of pocket. I’m an occupational therapist, or OT. I work with kids, and since the pandemic hit, I’ve been doing teletherapy. It’s challenging for me, and for the families I work with; I haven't been able to see all of my clients consistently.
I’m an independent contractor, so, if I don’t work, I don’t make any money. So far, the running cost is $8,022.76. Insurance has covered $1,431.92. He has a recent claim that hasn’t been submitted (the $381.52 in the receipt pictured). Come the 19th, he’s got another visit, so the cost is going to keep climbing.
The past year has been difficult on everyone, and I know times are hard for us all.
To me, Benny isn’t just a dog. He’s a pair of eyes I come home to, a running tackle when he sees me, a big goofy smile trying to beg for treats. He isn’t just “a pet”. He’s Benny, and I love him, and right now, I need help, to help him. Times are hard. I don’t want to ask for help, but I have to.
Anything you give will be greatly appreciated. Thank you so, so much.
