On December 21st, my world stopped for a moment. I noticed something was wrong with my cat, Belky, she was struggling to breathe. When you care for someone every day, when you know their habits, their little quirks, the way they sleep and the way they look at you, you can tell when something isn’t right. I know Belky the way a parent knows their child because she is my child.

Anyone who has ever loved a pet understands this feeling. Our fur babies aren’t “just animals.” They are family. They are comfort, companionship, and unconditional love. Seeing Belky in pain, fighting just to take a breath, was one of the most terrifying and heartbreaking moments of my life.

I rushed her to the emergency vet, where the doctors discovered that she had fluid surrounding her lungs, making it extremely difficult for her to breathe. They had to perform an emergency procedure called a thoracocentesis, draining a significant amount of fluid from her chest so she could breathe again. The fluid was also sent out for testing to help determine what is causing this. That emergency visit alone came at a cost of $1,130, which I paid immediately because saving her life in that moment was my only concern.

While the procedure helped stabilize her, it is only the beginning. Belky now needs further testing, including advanced imaging and a heart ultrasound, to determine the underlying cause and to prevent the fluid from coming back. This could include ongoing treatments, medications, and possibly additional procedures. The uncertainty is scary, but what’s even harder is knowing that time matters, and every step forward comes with a heavy financial cost.

Veterinary emergency care and specialty treatment are incredibly expensive. The estimated total cost for Belky’s care is around $10,000 an amount that feels overwhelming but one I would never hesitate to pursue if it means giving her a chance at a healthy life. Belky is not just a pet to me. She is my family, my comfort, my constant, and a piece of my heart. I would do absolutely anything for her.

La llevé de urgencia al veterinario de emergencia, donde me dijeron que tenía líquido rodeando sus pulmones, impidiéndole respirar con normalidad. Tuvieron que hacerle un procedimiento de emergencia llamado toracocentesis, drenando una gran cantidad de líquido de su pecho para salvarle la vida. Ese líquido fue enviado a análisis para tratar de encontrar la causa. Solo esa visita de emergencia tuvo un costo de $1,130, que pagué sin pensarlo dos veces, porque en ese momento lo único que importaba era que Belky siguiera con vida.

Es una cifra que abruma, pero jamás dudaría en luchar por ella si eso significa darle la oportunidad de una vida sana y digna. Belky no es solo una mascota para mí, es mi familia, mi consuelo, mi compañía constante y una parte irremplazable de mi corazón. Haría cualquier cosa por ella.
