Hi My name is Pam and I am raising funds to pay for life saving surgery for a dog abandoned right in front of us in a Walmart parking lot in Arizona. He was dumped like garbage and hid under our vehicle, terrified, hot and confused.
We rescued him, but he needs more help. Please watch our video...
We spent hours in the hot sun trying to coax him from under our vehicle. He snapped and growled in fear. Finally we were able to trap him using a fishing net. Defeated and expecting the worst, the poor dog soiled himself and collapsed on the ground. When he realized we were not going to hurt him he wrapped his paws around my arm and licked my gloved hand. Once we got him in our vehicle, he went into shock. Eyes rolled back in his head and tongue lolled out. He became unresponsive. We slowly hand fed him water until he came around. My four year old laid on the floor with him singing to him in hopes he would get better.
We decided to name him Dug from the movie Up. And in recognition of where we found him, his full name became Arizona Dug.
Hours later Dug came around and crawled into my 13 years old's lap in the front seat of the RV. Thrilled he was both alert and friendly, my 13 year old petted him enthusiastically. Then our new dog decided to try and crawl on the dashboard, that is when things went wrong. Dug began to whine... and then it happened.
Min, says "mom!!! MOM!!! He's peeing!!" Dug wasn't just being social, Dug was trying to tell us something. But being in an RV and in a line of traffic we couldn't just pull over. And Dug had been holding it a REALLY LONG TIME! We frantically looked for a place to pull over. Pee ran down Min's legs, and filled his shoes. Splashing sounds and a strong odor came from the front seat. Min started to gag! My niece who was in the driver's seat attempted to pull the large RV we were driving over onto a narrow embankment. We finally got Dug out of the RV but by this time he was done and laid down in the ditch and went back to sleep.
Thoroughly exhausted, Dug finally realized that he had found his family. Any kid who would let him pee on him had to be a good guy! Dug lived up to his name and his personality came through. Goofy and gentle, the scared snapping growling ball of fur we had crawl under our RV was replaced by an eager, sweet puppy.
We noted he was a little odd but hoped it was just stress and past abuse at the hands of the guy that threw him out of the back of his truck. But upon visiting the vet, we would soon learn that Dug has severe hip dysplasia and without a hip replacement would likely need to be humanely put to sleep due to the pain he would develop in his hips. But Dug is only 6 months old and aside from the hips is a wonderful dog with a lot to to live for.
We need to raise the funds to pay for a double hip replacement. This is his only option. If he does not get the surgery, we will likely have to put him to sleep before he reaches his second birthday. He is almost 7 months old now, and will be able to have the surgery by the time he is 1 years old.
Today he lives on pain meds, and limited exercise. He is a puppy and longs to play with the other dogs and his favorite four year old. The surgery is estimated to cost between $6800 and $8800 per hip and we will be driving him several hours to the WSU Veterinary Teaching hospital in Pullman to get the surgery (Veterinary Teaching Hospital | Washington State University (wsu.edu) ). It will likely take two trips and overnight stays. We shared our story on my personal Facebook page and friends and family encouraged me to reach out and start a GoFundMe page.
Unfortunately, Dug is not our only rescue. We are paying for medical bills for our other rescue Nutella. These bills were more than we could have anticipated. But we are determined to do all we can. We need your help to give these animals all we can to give them the quality of life they deserve.
Will you help?
