Brian Savage, beloved father of 3, arrived home to Scottsdale, Arizona last week after a trip to the Democratic Republic of the Congo and was overcome with chills, a fever, and overwhelming weakness. Soon after he was hospitalized and diagnosed with severe malaria. There are only 300 cases of severe malaria a year in the United States. As a result, the hospital was not equipped to provide treatment and the attending physician quickly formed an international panel of experts to consult on his care. In an effort to save Brian's life an experimental drug, Artesunate, was flown in from California just in time. While the drug was effective in treating the malaria it has caused damage to his liver, kidneys and spleen. Since his admission into the hospital he has had a laundry list of procedures including an MRI, lumbar puncture, CT Scan, dialysis, a number of other tests. At this time Brian remains in the ICU under careful watch of a team of specialists.
