Urgent Heart Surgery in Kisoro

Donation protected
Your heartbeat is so constant that it can be easy to ignore.  But when a young child’s heart starts to weaken, stopping him from running and playing with his friends, it’s impossible to look away.

I’m a primary care physician working in New York City.  During my training at Montefiore Hospital in the Bronx, I had the opportunity to work in a public hospital in Kisoro, Uganda, through a program supported by the NGO Doctors for Global Health and the Albert Einstein College of Medicine.  This program helps support a volunteer physician staff and community health worker program, but its budget is very limited.  Most high-tech treatments are unavailable on site and too expensive for patients to afford.

I worked closely with an interpreter while in Kisoro.  I loved his sense of humor, commitment to the community, and endless optimism.  But his younger brother wasn’t well.  In the hilly Kisoro countryside, just walking made the young boy short of breath.  On physical examination, he had a loud heart murmur, and after some tests, it turned out that the murmur and his symptoms were from a large ventricular septal defect – a hole in his heart.  Although we can treat him with medications to buy some time, there is no cure without surgery and death is imminent.

Heart surgery is complex, dangerous, and expensive, but in the United States, a child would get this surgery readily.  Insurance would pick up the bill.  In Uganda, resources are scarce, and for a family making less than six dollars a day, surgery is unaffordable.

Fixing this young boy’s heart will cost $7,000.  I am hoping we can raise enough to transform this child’s life.  Any size donation can help him run and play again, and for years to come, and I ask for your understanding and generosity.  Thank you.

*****UPDATE*****
With your help, we reached our goal!  Thank you for sharing this page to help reach more people, and thank you especially to everybody who donated.  Further donations are now closed to the campaign.  Physicians working for Doctors for Global Health in Uganda are busy making the arrangements for the surgery in Kampala.  These funds will go to Doctors for Global Health, who will arrange for payment of surgery as well as incidental costs to the family for things like transport to and from the capital. I will withdraw the funds into my account and write a check to Doctors for Global Health - Kisoro Fund, where it will be held until it is time to pay for the surgery in Uganda .  Your generosity means the world to this family.   Thank you.
