Save a father’s leg from amputation: life under apartheid

Hello, I am organizing this fundraiser for Anas Muhammad Al-Sharbati, the husband of my dear friend Asma. His leg is at immediate risk of amputation due to ongoing injuries sustained while working to provide for his family of three- two boys and one girl.

Both Asma and Anas live and work in the old city of Hebron/Al Khalil, Palestine, a place often described as a microcosm of apartheid and direct military occupation. Their whole lives, they have been subject to movement restrictions, random military curfews, checkpoints, and frequent settler harassment. Just meters from their home is an internationally sanctioned illegal settlement whose residents, under military protection, regularly storm the PA-administered old city to antagonize its residents. Many of these illegal settlers are American citizens. Together, these conditions have severely restricted economic opportunities for families like theirs.

On August 4, 2021, while working to support his children and pregnant wife, Anas fell from a great height. The bone in his foot shattered and protruded through his skin. The bone also shattered and a piece of it came out of his foot. Asma’s brother found the bone and brought it to the hospital.

After undergoing successful surgeries, Anas was instructed not to work or move. But with no one else to support his family, he had no choice but to seek work again. This caused new damage to his foot, and now the surrounding tissue is severely deteriorated and urgently requires surgery.

Because the tissue is so damaged, treatment in Palestine cannot repair the damaged tissue; the specialist says that surgery must be in Jordan. Fortunately, he has Jordanian citizenship and can receive the surgery there.

The cost of the operation is 15,000 shekels- roughly $5,000 USD. I am urgently raising this amount to prevent the amputation of his leg and to help preserve his ability to walk, work, and care for his family.

About me: My name is Maya Seale, and I am from Dallas Texas. I know Asma and Anas personally and have stayed in their home in the old city of Hebron many nights.
