Savannah and Matt's Hurricane Sally Recovery
The morning of September 16th, the day that Hurricane Sally hit, changed the lives of Savannah Coy (24 years old) and Matthew Lawrence (23 years old) who had just started their lives together in their own home. They had gone home the night before with the thought the Hurricane Sally would not be too bad. That would be the beginning of a nightmare that began early the next morning. At around 1 a.m., the house started to really shake with the wind. They still felt that their home could withstand this storm, since it had weathered other storms before they had moved into it. In the early morning hours, there was a big crash, as a neighbor's roof flew off their home crashing into their home, ripping their roof off and caving in half of their home. The immediately jumped out of their bed, where they had finally fell asleep after sitting up anxiously all night. Their bedroom door flew open and there was no way for them to keep the storm out of their own little sanctuary as their house started to blow apart. As they quickly grabbed their two cats and threw them into a duffel bag to try to get to safety. Their journey would take hours of cutting through trees and braving rushing water just to find a safe place to hunker down and wait for rescue. When they were able to finally make it back to their home, they came to realize how lucky they were to survive their ordeal. If they had been in any of the other rooms of their house when it blew apart, they would not have been as lucky. Now they are facing a new challenge. They are now homeless relying on friends and family to provide a place for them. They lost everything in just a few moments and now have to start over from scratch.
