Let me tell you a little bit about myself and this precious little girl and her amazing mother.
While I was about and about in my neighborhood at garage sales, I came across Savanah’s
grandmother Linda. After chatting it up a bit she told me about Savanah who has Cerebral
Palsy. In turn I mentioned to her that I was certified as a respite healthcare worker. I worked for
the same family part time for 17 years for a child with Cerebral Palsy also. I offered my services
if it was ever necessary. It was then that a great friendship and love started with this family.
Kelly is an amazing single mother to this beautiful little girl. She has conquered therapist
management as well as procuring all of the necessary medical equipment necessary to give
Savanah her best life possible. Kelly has been an elementary school teacher for a number of
years. Then Covid hit and she could not take the chance of bringing any illness home with her.
She was able to take a leave of absence this past year but will have to go back to work this fall.
Savanah will hopefully be going to school in the fall also. This will require Kelly to arrange for
occasional day care. Right now her Mom and I have been helping out when it is safe to do so.
Savanah is 5 years old now. Happy and a smile you will never forget. She has been a trooper
between her speech, physical and occupational therapy. Very little fussing about it unless she
gets mad, and then you know about it. Due to the CP she has a difficult time walking and
control of her hands and mouth. She also has periodic seizures which they have been trying to
control with medication.
Kelly and the Doctors have come up with a plan that should greatly improve the future for
Savanah. There is a surgery where the doctors cut very specific nerves along the spinal cord.
It reduces spasticity of the muscles for more fluid movement.. This in turn will aid in motor skills
pertaining to walking, upper body muscle control, speech and eating, potty training, cognitive
ability and mood. A NEW LIFE FOR SAVANAH!
The surgery will take place in February of this year in St. Louis, MO. She will be in the hospital
for about a week and then two weeks of intensive daily therapy. This will require Kelly to stay at
an AirB&B for at least that long at her expense. And then, specialized therapy will have to be set
up back at home in Illinois.
Kelly will move heaven and earth for Savanah’s well-being. I hope you can find it in your hearts
to give a little bit to this amazing family. I love them and their strength. And if you knew them
you would too.
