Hello my name is Rebeca Lastra. My husband Saulo was diagnosed with Glioblastoma and Malignant Astrocytoma in June 1, 2018.
At that time, the first surgery was performed. He was able to recover during that year. He was able to return to work, play guitar during worship at church, which is something he loved to to do.
He had a second surgery June 2019 in which we started to see a decline in his cognitive health. In the beginning of the year, I started noticing that he was having trouble with his speech and wasn't able to communicate fluently.
Since March of 2020, his ability to swallow was compromised. I could no longer offer him the help that was needed for his care. He had to be hospitalized and found out that the tumor had invaded his brain. A third surgery was performed this past June 3, 2020.
Saulo is not able to eat as his cognitive development has been lost and his ability to swallow as well. He was placed in rehab and is no longer responding to therapy. He has been moved to hospice care.
Saulo is now able to receive nutrition thru a feeding tube placed on his stomach. Since I am having trouble with my neck, shoulder, and wrists due to a car accident. I am not able to offer him the physical assistance care he needs.
Thankfully, my daughter in law was able to assist me with hospice care and guidance during these hard times. My children and immediate family have been there for me through these tough times of hard decisions and best care options for Saulo. Members from the church provided us with faithful prayers and supplies needed.
Our insurance is only able to offer partial coverage for hospice. We need help raising the funds to cover his stay in the group home as the payments are due monthly and are high costs due to his current conditions. We have accrued extremely high costs in medical bills and need assistance in paying back the collections.
The estimated monthly costs of the group home stays per month is between 2500 to 3000 per month.
Ultimately, my desire is that my husband will have the best possible care and quality of life during this time.
