In our summer travels to rural West Bengal, we met an 4 year old boy named Muhammad. Sitting beside him, we saw him happily color a tattered book and play with other children. However, we also noticed that he seemed to have trouble keeping up with the other children. Concerned about Muhammad, we reached out to the local village nutritionist and learned that he suffered from severe acute malnutrition (SAM), a condition with a mortality rate nearing 50%. Often considered to be the silent crisis of South Asia, SAM accounts for 35% of children’s deaths under the age of 5. While both the government and private sectors combat this issue today, over 110 million children in South Asia still suffer from some form of malnutrition.


After learning about the severity and prevalence of SAM, we were motivated to help children like Muhammad recover. Our founders assembled a diverse team, all motivated to fight the malnutrition epidemic plaguing South Asia. With backgrounds ranging from computer programming to public policy, our team seeks to devise a nutritionally-dense paste that could enable malnourished children to recover. To date, we have collaborated with the Johns Hopkins Center for Human Nutrition, industry leaders like Dr. Mark Manary (the pioneer of energy-dense pastes in Africa), as well as Pakistani and Indian field experts. 


The first step to feeding children like Muhammad is to lab test the nutritional efficacy of our energy-dense pastes. To achieve this goal, we ask for your help. We pledge to use all funds to assure that our recipes are nutritiously sound to be fed to children in our next step of clinical trials.
