Luke Campey's new wheels
Donation protected
Luke's grandad Richard Stainsby is riding a horse in the charity race at Garthorpe Races on Saturday 25th April to help raise money for a new lightweight wheelchair for Luke.
We would like to give a huge thank you to his boss Mr C Bealby for providing the horse and giving him the opportunity to take part and raise money. If you would like to give any donations, please do so after the race, just incase of a non-runner!
If horse does run, the race will be after 5pm, after all the other races. I will let you all know how it went and where he finished!!
Fingers crossed it goes to plan!!
Thank you all.
About Luke
Luke has cerebral palsy caused by an intraventricular haemorrhage at 20weeks in utero, due to nait. This is a blood platelet disorder I suffer from (Lukes mum!).
Luke had blood transfusions when he was born to raise his platelet count and was allowed home after 4 days in neo natal care and the maternity ward. Unfortunately, because of his brain haemorrhage he suffered from hydrocephalus (swelling of his head/brain due to excess fluid& blood on the brain).
Luke had a ventriculostomy at 2months of age to remove the excess fluid& blood from his brain. Unfortunately, the hydrocephalus caused damage to his optic nerve so caused him to have a nystagmus (wobbly eyes!) and visual impairment so can't see that far away. He also has left sided weakness and symptomatic focal epilepsy but has been seizure free for a couple of years! yay!!
Throughout Lukes life he has had to endure many hospital visits, Botox injections and daily physio. He works so hard and is always upbeat and tries his hardest! He currently uses tripods (walking sticks) for short distance walking but can't walk for long before he gets too tired.
He uses his wheelchair for getting around longer distances and sports at school. He wants to be able to join in at the same pace as his peers, unfortunately, his current wheelchair is very heavy so struggles to propel himself for long and it is hard to push!
Luke would like to have a 'cool' wheelchair and his face was a picture when he tried out a lightweight dynamic easy to propel wheelchair. He loved it and asked if we could buy it him then and there! The price quoted was in excess of £2300!
We have applied to Whizz Kidz and are waiting for an assessment on which wheelchair he can have and if they can help. If Whizz Kidz can help then we will be contributing the money raised to them, if they can't help we will get the wheelchair he tested from Bromakins or another lightweight one.
Luke has the best personality, he is bubbly, cheeky and could talk for England!! He just wants to be seen as a 'normal' child just because he is in a wheelchair! and mainly to be more independent with a wheelchair he can feel confident in and easily wheel himself.
Any support and donation will be greatly recieved.
If we raise more money than needed we will split the money to charities - Dreams Come True which have helped Luke already, and Whizz Kidz who are currently helping him.
Thank you all for any support or help you can give.
