Cycling the Sarn Helen Way (in Reverse) — A Solo Ride for Three Worthy Causes
This summer (September 2025), I’m taking on a challenging solo cycling adventure in reverse along the ancient Sarn Helen Way (194 miles, 5500m elevation gain off-road)— a route steeped in Roman history, winding through the rugged heart of Wales — to raise money for three causes close to my heart: the Army Benevolent Fund, the REME Charity, and Llandudno Karate.
Riding mostly solo, with a support vehicle meeting me at intervals, this journey isn’t just about physical endurance. It’s about giving back to communities that shape lives, support those in service, and inspire young people through discipline and resilience.
Why These Causes?
1. Army Benevolent Fund (The Soldiers’ Charity)
The Army Benevolent Fund is the British Army’s national charity, providing lifelong support to soldiers, veterans, and their families in times of need. From helping injured veterans rebuild their lives to supporting families during hardship, this charity stands behind those who’ve served our country — and now it’s our turn to stand behind them.
2. The REME Charity
Representing the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (REME), this charity supports serving and former REME personnel and their families. It helps fund welfare services, recovery support, and community projects that keep the REME family strong — both during service and after.
3. Llandudno Karate
A local club with a powerful impact, Llandudno Karate is more than a place to train — it’s a space where young people develop discipline, confidence, and lifelong skills. Funds raised will go toward improving facilities, supporting young athletes, and making karate accessible to all in the community.
The Journey
The Sarn Helen Way, believed to follow ancient Roman roads, is a route of breathtaking beauty and brutal terrain — a fitting backdrop for a challenge with real meaning. Reversing the route adds another layer of complexity, but I’m taking it on with determination, grit, and a clear purpose.
Though I’ll be cycling solo for most of the route, a support vehicle will intersect periodically — helping keep the wheels turning and the mission moving.
How You Can Help
Whether you're able to donate, share the journey, or simply spread the word about these incredible causes, every bit of support makes a difference.
Let’s ride for those who’ve served, those who fix and fight, and the next generation of martial artists.
