Sara's WOD Epilepsy Awareness Event

Did you know that…

· November is National Epilepsy Awareness Month
· 2.9 million people in the U.S. are living with epilepsy
· 1 in 26 people will develop epilepsy at some point in their lifetime

For us at CrossFit Randolph, it is even closer to home than any of us may realize.

We would like to share with you the very personal journey of Arnel and his wife Sara and what it has been like for them as a family living with epilepsy.

Sara had her first Grand mal seizure on January 25, 2000 and since then has averaged two seizures a year.

Over the past fifteen years Sara has tried five to six different medications, mostly in the beginning all to no avail.  Currently, Sara is in the process of trying new medications in hopes of finding something that will help her control her condition.

Over the past four months, however, Sara has had a seizure nearly every ten days.  “Why more seizures?”  “Why now?”  No one knows!

During an episode which can last two to five minutes, Sara is at high risk of head injury, biting her tongue hard enough to bleed, or worse yet choking if unsupervised. It's a small period of time, but to Arnel it feels like an eternity.

Their Many Challenges

After a seizure, Sara's recovery period is up to two days, during which time she spends 85% of the time sleeping, with little or no food, and commonly experiencing dry vomiting. While recovering, it is nearly impossible for her to look after their children, Austin (3-years-old) and Emry (4-months-old).

For Sara, her seizures have typically been occurring in the morning hours.  As Arnel needs to be there for his wife, it has become very difficult for him to get to work at the gym any time before 10:30am.

In order to qualify for a driver’s license, Sara needs to be seizure free for one year.  Unfortunately, this has not been the case and Sara is not able to drive, completely depending on Arnel in order to go places.

In addition, Sara and Arnel have bought a fixer upper in Byram that’s been in “construction mode” for the past four months. With the winter months quickly approaching, Sara's increased episodes, and 2 small children home, it has become very hard to finish the many projects that still need to be completed in the house.

Our Campaign

We are a small group of members of Crossfit Randolph. We love our gym and the people who make it our home box. We want to help Sara and Arnel, and we ask you to join us.

Please donate what you can to this campaign. All funds raised are to help Sara and Arnel with her ongoing treatment expenses.

Join us for a special fundraising WOD and after party on Saturday, November 21st. at 10:00am at Crossfit Randolph.

We ask that you wear something purple, the color of Epilepsy Awareness.

We hope to see you there!
