The Story Behind All Of This...

First off, thank you for coming to this page and reading this.

I've always been incredibly independent but felt a restriction when it came to getting around. Just like any sixteen year old, I was really excited to get my drivers license. I knew that it was going to take some time, given the fact that I have Spina Bifida and Scoliosis. I talked to the doctors right away so they knew my plan- when I turn sixteen I want to get my license.

Fast-forward almost 5 years later I finally got my learners permit... a restricted learners permit. So that means "hey look you have a license, but we're not going to let you drive".

It took me almost five years to obtain a restricted learners permit because of all of the ridiculous road blocks I encountered.

I wanted my drivers license- to be allowed a drivers license I needed to be assessed by an OT- to be considered for assessment I need to have my drivers license.

Makes sense, right?

Yes and no. But you can see the dilemma I was faced with. And that's why it took so long.

The cost of the assessment, and car modifications, (which I applied for funding and was told my case isn't a priority), comes to a whopping $10,000 Canadian.

Now, I'm a student who works part time and lives by herself. I don't have any money. But I need this assessment. The assessment itself costs $850 + $900 for mandatory on road and $420 for drivers help (which they're trying to make a group for the disabled drivers).

The rest of the money will go towards car modifications, which I have been quoted a tentative quote of:

Hand controls: $1,450

Extensions: $100 each

Secondary controls: $3,000

Chair lift: $3,000

All without tax.
