Journal Entry by Sarah Hauck — 1 hour ago
As most of you know, I ended up with a major blood clot in my left leg while I was in Arkansas for my sister’s wedding. Since then, many have asked if they knew what would have caused the clot. While I’ve known the possible cause all along, it hasn’t been until today that it was medically confirmed that I have colon cancer.. The CT Scan done in AR to look at my leg showed an abnormality in my colon (cecum to be exact).
I was sent home from AR and asked to follow up with my doctors at home. During my follow up with my primary care provider this week, she was concerned about clots in my lungs. Off to the hospital I went for another admission and a CT Scan confirmed I had a pulmonary embolism in each lung. I was started on IV Heparin and they went ahead a scheduled a colonoscopy for Thursday. They tried to stop the Heparin in preparation for my colonoscopy but unfortunately my leg started to swell and get purple again. They restarted the Heparin and decided they would do the colonoscopy but not take biopsies. This colonoscopy found the mass in the cecum and also found a mass in the sigmoid.
Due to my blood clots, Manhattan decided to transfer me to KUMC. They performed another colonoscopy yesterday and the results came back today that both spots are cancerous.
It has been a rough week and a half and the plan changes daily. This is not something I thought I would be posting at 43 years old. At this point we have a few other things to look at to know what direction to go in. A lot depends on if I start bleeding from the masses. Since I am on Heparin, this can be a dangerous situation and would cause them to do surgery immediately.
I really appreciate everyone’s well wishes and thoughts and prayers up to this point. I am lucky that I have a huge support system to help me out and to remind me that God is in control.
Much love to all - Sarah
