On Thanksgiving morning my cousin Sarah Bartley Crawshaw felt tremendous pain in her chest and back. Yet for anyone who knows Sarah this took the back burner as she prepared for the holiday, texted with her best friends and helped her daughters get ready. When my Aunt Jane arrived to head to Thanksgiving she acknowledged that pain like this should not be ignored and insisted a trip to the hospital. En route Sarah's pain grew and she wound up at Memorial Hospital in severe discomfort. Within a few hours it was diagnosed that her aorta had dissected and was immediately transported to Rhode Island Hospital for critical care.
Family and friends swarmed the hospital as Sarah most certainly does for her friends, family and loved ones. She is consistently quick to help and support and encourage a laugh as only she can ! So nearly 20 of us spent our Thanksgiving in the waiting room, to pray, encourage, and send love.
In initial treatment it was said the dissection would be treated with medicine and a stent to relieve pain and pressure. Yet the pain did not subside. Jim remained by her side yet overwhelmed with the inability to ease her discomfort.
Unfortunately, one week later, this past Thursday as discharge papers were being processed Sarah's pain grew. Scared and unsure of how to react, the extreme pain took over. Her aorta ruptured and she was rushed into immediate emergency surgery lasting 8-9 hours. Leaving Sarah in a medically induced coma, intubated and on a ventilator in order heal and regain strength for an indefinite amount of time.
During these most difficult of times, Sarah's loving and supportive husband and family have been with her night and day, providing her with unending love. Yet leaving Jim out of work during this time to be there for Sarah and take care of their two young daughters Hannah (16) and Grace (11).
I am here to do a small part in helping Sarah and Jim during these difficult times; in an effort to minimize the financial stressors associated with Sarah's medical care, and the families living expenses since neither parent are currently working. We believe that every one should have the time they need to be with each other and their children when tragedy strikes. Please help us support the Crawshaw family and show Sarah how much the we truly love her.
