Sarah Ruff is Finally Getting a Service Dog!
This will provide a great relief to Sarah, her family and her friends.
Please help support our dear friend Sarah Ruff. Sarah is bubbly and the most loyal person we know. She loves grammar and writing. She cares incredibly deeply for her little sister. Sarah also suffers from epilepsy caused by Periventricular Heterotopias. Weekly, and sometimes daily, Sarah experiences complex partial seizures and occasionally grand mal seizures. Sarah’s seizures cause disorientation and place her in harm’s way. Several times we have found Sarah wandering the halls of her apartment or at a random place on campus, unaware of where she is. Too many times, Sarah has crossed the street while having a seizure. As Sarah would say “it is a true miracle from Jesus” that these accidents have not resulted in a bad consequence. Sarah’s family and friends want to prevent the possibility of serious consequences resulting from Sarah’s seizures; for this reason, Sarah is getting a service dog! The service dog will be able to prevent Sarah’s dangerous disorientation following a seizure and may even alert her to her next seizure. Most importantly, the service dog will keep Sarah safe.
Sarah is 22 and was diagnosed with epilepsy in 2009. If you know Sarah, you know that you can count on her for a smile, for empathy, for fearless expression of emotion, and for meaningful words of encouragement. Sarah makes her friends feel loved and confident. Sarah, however, is often less confident in herself than she is in her friends. Because of her seizures, Sarah has missed opportunities and forgotten important dates and deadlines. Because of her seizures, Sarah has felt the need to opt out of special events such as friends’ birthday celebrations, holiday parties, and various get togethers. In her words, “I might have a seizure, I don’t want anyone to feel like they need to take care of me.” Because of her seizures, Sarah mistakenly feels like a burden. This feeling of being controlled by something else has harmed her self-confidence. We believe that if Sarah knows that she has a service dog--a companion always by her side--she will feel greater self-confidence. Sarah should feel as confident as she makes us feel.
We are asking for the help of our family, friends, neighbors and even strangers. Any donation will help. Sarah’s family must have $2800 to put down for the first payment towards her service dog. Our goal is to cover this first payment, but wouldn’t it be amazing if we could cover more than that? The total cost of Sarah’s future dog is $33,600.
