Dear Everyone,
I would like to dedicate this fundraiser to my niece, Sara. Sara was diagnosed with Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis when she was 10 years old. She is now 14 and she has gone through so much since then. Over the course of 4 years, Sara has had countless doctor appointments, X-rays, MRI's and hospital trips to monitor the progress of the curves in her spine. During this time she underwent very intense Schroth method camps in Serbia and Bulgaria. She was also in a custom hard-shell back brace for 18 hours a day for more than 2 years in an attempt to straighten her spine as she grew. Her curves were resistant to the brace and the exercises, and unfortunately did not improve as we hoped. Sara’s curve has rapidly worsened this year and she is now dealing with a curve of 83 degrees. A curve of this magnitude causes her lungs to be slowly crushed as the curve worsens. She's dangerously close to severe complications and long-term consequences to her quality of life. It’s imperative that she has an operation as soon as possible so that as she continues to grow the condition will not worsen and she is left with irreversible damage to her body.
Living in a place like Macedonia there is no reliable option for this kind of surgery. We were lucky to learn about Prof. Dr. Ahmet Alanay as one of the leading surgeons in both Turkey and the world. He showed interest in Sara’s case and has given us tremendous hope. Unfortunately, this surgery comes at a high cost. As a family we’ll make every possible sacrifice to make this happen, but the amount of money that needs to be paid is hard to overcome alone. Her parents are already drained due to the previous treatments she went through and their hands are tied.
TO KNOW SARA IS TO LOVE HER! Despite having suffered through so many years, she has proven that she is strong, is a fighter, and has a strong desire to live. She is brilliant and beautiful in so many ways. She is a straight A student, very compassionate and the politest human being I have ever seen. But why is she SO IMPORTANT and dear to me? I have also personally gone through some very tough periods in my life. Guess who was there next to me to brighten my day and make me smile? Being the smartest and the cutest little child, the days went by easy for me and I was lucky to have her by my side. It’s time for me to give her all my support and care she deserves.
Once her spine is saved by this surgery, Sara will be out of danger and able to run, jump, play her beloved sports, and go on to do all the big things ahead of her, she's only 14 years old! We know there's a huge battle ahead, and Sara is prepared to fight with everything she's got. She's scared, we're all very scared, but not afraid.
