Sara's battle with Guillain-Barré Syndrome

Donation protected
Sara is currently in ICU at Emory University Hospital fighting pneumonia and Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS).

It started as a faint tingling in her fingers and toes on Monday, July 22. The tingling grew more intense and painful throughout the week. She sought treatment from her local hospital twice, only to be dismissed. On Saturday, July 27, her hands and feet went completely numb and she struggled to breathe. Her family decided she should visit a different hospital, as she was losing the ability to lift her arms and walk. At that hospital, the Doctor suspected GBS and flew her via helicopter to Emory.

At Emory, Sara had a spinal tap to confirm the diagnosis of Guillain-Barre Syndrome (a rare neurological disorder in which the body's immune system mistakenly attacks part of its peripheral nervous system—the network of nerves located outside of the brain and spinal cord.) She was placed on a ventilator to help her breathing and started IVIG treatments to combat the antibodies in her plasma that are attacking her healthy nerves. She then spiked a low-grade fever-thought to be a reaction to the IVIG treatments or her immobility. However, the fever persisted for a few days, and led to the discovery of pneumonia. She is now receiving treatment for that, too.

Over the course of the past (almost) week Sara has received fantastic care at Emory, and her loving family and closest friends have been by her side to help her get as comfortable as possible. She is in a lot of pain and has difficulty communicating this, but she remains in good spirits and her Doctors are certain she will make a full recovery... they just don't know when.

So... Many friends and co-workers have asked how they can help offset the medical expenses, time off from work, childcare, etc.. We created this page for those who feel led to give, but truthfully, we are just as grateful for every encouraging call and prayer, hot meal, and all of the help with the little ones. It means the world to us -- Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
