Sara and Justin Sharp

In May of 2017, Sara and Justin's lives were turned upside-down.

Less than a month removed from celebrating their brand new marriage, after 9 years together, they faced a nightmare scenario. Sara had been diagnosed with breast cancer.

Over the course of the next two years, Sara would have countless doctor visits. She would undergo numerous rounds of chemotherapy and radiation. She would have a double mastectomy and some lymph nodes removed, followed by an infection and more surgery. And more doctor visits. 

Nothing can prepare you for that. But Sara fought on, with Justin right by her side. 



After battling for two years to beat breast cancer, she suddenly developed severe neurological symptoms. A trip to the ER ended with a hospital stay in the city - and a new diagnosis. 

After everything they had been through, Sara has now been diagnosed with leptomeningeal disease (LMD).

This diagnosis occurs in roughly 5% of people with cancer. LMD is cancer that has moved into the cerebrospinal fluid that surrounds the brain and the spinal cord. It can lead to many symptoms including, pain, headache, nausea, loss of motor skills, numbness, trouble speaking, and confusion.

There is no cure for LMD. 

To fight the symptoms and extend her life, a port will be put into her skull so that the chemotherapy can be delivered directly to the cerebrospinal fluid because regular means are not able to reach the cancer.

Sara can no longer work and Justin is taking an extended leave of absence to care for her. Unfortunately, after this week, Justin's leave will be unpaid.
