Santinos Road to Recovery
Donation protected
Santino was born 2 weeks early with Grade 4 & 5 Hydronephrosis.
This has affected his right kidney and his bladder. His urologist cautioned his parents while he was growing, to be wary of any hard playing that could possibly injure the weak kidney.
When he was old enough (age 6) He had a 10 hour major surgery to reconstruct both his ureters, and reposition them in his bladder. His right kidney functions but is permanently weak from being born with hydronephrosis.
On the weekend of his ninth birthday (9/24) he had a pool party with friends. While playing in the pool he was accidentally kicked in the abdomen (which he said later "hurt very bad")
The day after, he complained of his stomach hurting which usually means constipation. As the day went on, he vomited. Then the vomiting became more frequent and he began to look really sick. His belly was bloated.
He was brought to Sunrise Children's hospital and they admitted him immediately.
Three days of testing revealed MRSA in his blood and urine.
On the fourth day a CT scan revealed his right kidney had a tear in the bottom and was leaking into his abdomen.
This is something all the doctors and nurses agree they have never seen before.
Intense antibiotics, abdomen draining, multiple CT scans, ultrasounds should have had him feeling better after 7 days.
Still he could not eat anything without vomiting and his pain was still severe.
Three days of this passed until his charge nurse pushed to have another CT scan done.
On Friday 10/7 what was revealed was 3-4 baseball sized pockets of pus in his abdomen something ultrasound could not reveal.
If any of them happened to rupture, the MRSA bacteria could infect his organs.
A surgeon was summoned, and the wait for surgery to drain these was about 10 hours.
They got it in time, and they left in a drain for excess.
Currently Santino still cannot eat without vomiting and the pain he endures continues. It's been sixteen days since his last meal.
The road to recovery is painstakely slow.
His parents have been in the same tiny ICU room everyday, this is a Single Income Family. Jeffrey & Gayla have not left his side. Jeffrey has not been back to work since.
