As many of you know, Erin, George, and Sofia have had a rough summer. They were hit by another vehicle in an accident at the end of July, which left their car totaled and sent all of them to the hospital. George sustained back and neck injuries requiring months of physical therapy. Erin's concussion has left her with post-concussive syndrome, also requiring months of physical, occupational, speech, and psychotherapy, and directions to not make any life decisions or take on any additional stress (!!!) They've been urged to seek out a child psychologist for Sofia, as well, who has been showing symptoms of PTSD.
Erin cannot drive at all, which means she can't take the car while George works. She has already racked up $550 in Lyft fees to get to 5 - 7 therapy sessions each week just over the last month. Nor can she go back to work until after she has healed. This means her COBRA insurance premium is $800 out of pocket each month.
To make matters worse, their rental car was broken into last weekend, at which point Erin's wallet, including cards, cash, ID, and house keys were stolen, plus all of the paperwork they had been putting together for Sofia's ongoing speech therapy file with the county, and their injury settlement case. This included Sofia's SS card and birth certificate.
Today, they were informed by their personal injury lawyer that he was dropping their case because the medical costs incurred were so astronomical that it wasn't worth seeking a settlement, since their own medical insurance companies would claim all of what the maximum payout would be from the insurance of the driver who hit them, before they'd ever see a cent (yes this is perfectly legal, sadly).
They now have no chance of recouping any of the tens of thousands of dollars that they will have spent on emergency medical care, uncovered imaging, their own high medical insurance deductibles, then co-insurance and co-pays for 6 months of various therapies, car rental deductibles, new car payments, house-re-keying, and various other sundries. We calculate that by 6 months, it will have cost them $20,000. I am happy to share the breakdown of projected 6-month costs with anyone.
If you can give $1, $5, $10, $25 - literally anything will help. Other things that could help:
- sign up for 1 or more slots to drive Erin from their home in Tucker to her therapy sessions at the Shepard Center
- sign up for a Meal Train slot to send them a meal from one of their preferred locations. Home cooked meals are always welcome, too! And if you are closer to Emory University, we can make arrangements for you to drop it off there before 5 PM.
We thank you sincerely for supporting them during an incredibly rough time!
