Dear family and friends,

On October 2nd, I'm running a 10K in Santa Barbara, California on behalf of the KLM Foundation, a non-profit organization that provides scholarship and leadership development opportunities to underprivileged kids in rural South Africa. KLM strives to identify and sponsor talented young students from rural villages – students who have all the potential in the world and no educational opportunities to nurture and grow their ability. Public schools in South Africa’s rural villages are relics of the apartheid-era and victims of corruption and terrible public service delivery. South Africa is a country known for profound economic disparities – the bright lights of Johannesburg and Cape Town might as well be a world away. Young people from rural villages have no access to real education, no prospects for a meaningful career, and no role models and support systems to help them to break out of the cycle of poverty. That’s why I support KLM. They find exceptionally smart and talented kids and provide them with the educational opportunity of a lifetime, breaking that cycle of poverty one deserving student at a time. They have taken 22 students over the last 15 years and the oldest students have now graduated from college and are working professionals: accountants, lawyers, social workers.
