Sanitary Kit Campaign
Donation protected
My name is Linda Gautama and as an African Girl Foundation Ambassador my campaign is advocating the importance of young Kenyan girl's education.
The Problem:
-In Africa today, over 65% of school girls cannot afford sanitary products as a basic human necessity.
-UNICEF reports that every 1 in 10 girls miss school for a minimum of 6 weeks every year because they cannot afford sanitary protection and eventually end up dropping out of school altogether
-Unfortunately, menstruation is seen as an unspeakable taboo rather than a normal body function!
How:
I have partnered with African Girl Foundation (AGF) to reach our common goal of providing school girls in Kenya with sanitary kits and bringing awareness to the issue. AGF is a non-profit charity that provides underpriveledged girls in Kenya with sanitary kits to keep them in school and the workplace.
Now, our goal is to provide 400 girls in Nakuru, Kenya with 1 sanitary kit that each girl will utilize for a year. Each kit comes with 4 reusable pads, 6 bars of soap, 1 washable pocket bag to store the sanitary product after use, and 1 sturdy long lasting drawstring bag that will help to ensure her privacy while using the sanitary products. Each box also comes with clear instructions in English and Swahili, so no girl finds herself unable to use the kit.
The Benefits:
-Higher concentration levels in class
-Higher class retention rates (up to 60%)
-Reduced absenteeism
-A decline in teenage pregnancies
-A decline in HIV and STD infections
-Increase in confidence and self esteem
-Cost effective
