On January 4, 2020, my sister Cristina, her husband Trevor, and one of her three children were in a car accident. A truck hit the passenger side of their van where Cristina was sitting. Trevor and the 3 year old had minor injuries, but Cristina lost consciousness and was admitted to the hospital for a week.
**They just learned that this entire hospital stay was out of network, creating a huge financial burden for them**
Cristina suffered multiple injuries including a severe concussion, six broken ribs, a broken collarbone, and a punctured lung that repeatedly collapsed throughout her hospital stay.
For the average healthy person, these types of injuries would be terrible to have but would require a relatively short recovery time. Cristina has a rare form of arthritis called Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS) with fusion that causes her body to be in a constant state of inflammation. Her AS is extremely advanced and has already caused fusion in her vertebrae and occasional paralysis. This makes recovery much more difficult and slower than the average person. Cristina is the main caregiver for her three young children and will need all the help she can get.
The week-long hospital stay included multiple CT scans and two surgeries to relieve her filled lung and to add a metal plate to stabilize her collarbone. During this time Trevor took off work to care for Cristina and stay with her in the hospital.
Their minivan was totaled in the accident and insurance will cover the cost of the vehicle but leaves them no money for a replacement. The minivan is their main vehicle for transporting the kids to school and activities safely in all weather.
Funds will go towards:
-Covering costs incurred during the hospital stay
-Cost of ambulance to the hospital
-Wages lost during time taken off work
-Home care help
-Meals for the family during recovery
-A replacement vehicle
