Sandy's Last Wishes

Donation protected
My dearest friend, Sandy Lahmann has lived an amazing life of service, education, advocacy, and fierce independence. She worked as a special education teacher, an expert in the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and an independent living coordinator helping adults with disabilities to achieve their goals for living independently in their community. She also raised two incredible children as a single mother, and parenting them is her proudest achievement. Though she took another chance on love and married again in 2013, the strain of her illness and ultimately her diagnosis of cancer was more than this marriage could bear. Sadly, the breakup of this marriage and the lack of financial commitment from her former spouse has decimated her financial resources.

Sandy is nearing the end of her three-year fight against terminal cancer (Stage IV adenocarcinoma). She has been blessed to have the direct care and support and unlimited love of her adult children, Zach and Tory, who have given up their own lives and resources to take care of their mother. Sandy is being cared for daily by Tory, while the two of them live with Zach in his one bedroom apartment in Seattle, where Zach works full time and helps with Sandy’s care in the evenings. Sandy is currently receiving hospice care and fights a daily battle against pain and fatigue but continues to surpass everyone’s expectations for how long she might have left.

As she nears the end of her fight, Sandy has only two wishes – first to die at home surrounded by the memorabilia of her full life, and second, to reduce the burden on Tory and Zach. Her three-year fight with cancer has decimated her financial resources and the financial resources of her adult children, so we are pursuing this GoFundMe campaign to raise funds to allow Sandy, Tory and Zach to move into a larger, more accessible apartment and to move Sandy’s personal property and life treasures from a storage unit in Colorado to her home in Seattle.

The amount we estimate for moving costs is $4,000, and for the difference in cost for an apartment big enough for three vs. the tiny one bedroom they're in now is $8,000. Anything you can share will be a blessing, received with gratitude and used wisely.
