I'm moving back to Puerto Rico this summer to run a music venue that focuses on building a stronger Noise and Experimental music and art community in the island. There, I hope to work on an interchange program between Bay Area and Puerto Rican artists and act as a bridge for touring musicians.
I was laid off from my job last October and since then, it has been hard finding a job that will only employ me for a short term. I'm now forced to spend most of my time trying to figure out an income to survive expensive SF life and cover my moving expenses but this will leave me with no time and energy for all of my pending music and community projects.
Although I currently do not have a paying job, I work many hours a week at an underground Noise and Experimental music venue in Oakland cleaning toilets, doing sound, working door and hosting fringe local and international artists for no pay. In fact, we, the collective, pay rent out of pocket, so we don't only do it for free, but also have to pay for it. I've been doing this for many years and love it, but this is not a sustainable practice for me without a paying job on the side.
The rest of my time and energy has been going towards performing with my musical projects Las Sucias, DemonSleeper, etc., with many shows coming up still. Most of these shows I don't even make enough money from to cover the BART transportation and burritos. This is without counting the cost of the music gear that I've lost to rain water from walking long distances to gigs, cables, batteries, etc. So I'm not only not getting paid enough for gigs, I have to pay for them too.
I spend most of my time doing art, music, promoting and hosting shows and its costing me money, something I didn't notice as much when I had a serious good paying job. I have many pending live performances, audio recordings, music videos and a performance art project that I would like to complete before my move, but these are proving impossible to carry out without the time and money necessary.
I need help to pay for some of my living expenses (rent, phone, internet, and food) from now until May so that I can complete my last shows at the Oakland noise venue, Las Sucias and DemonSleeper shows, recordings, videos. This will also help me complete a new guerrilla performance art project that I hope will eventually help me pay for the moving expenses.
P.S. My musical project Las Sucias is the most important music project that I have ever been a part of. It is a feminist reaction to Raggaetón and other Caribbean music styles that promote masogyny. It gives a long overdue voice to latinxs and colonized latinx cultures that are trying to be erased from history. I would like to work on this project as much as possible before Danishta, the other sucia, and I physically separate. We will keep this project alive as long as it's needed and hope to inspire other latinxs to scream up against injustices and discrimination. Therefore, we need to complete several recordings, videos, merch, live shows, etc so that our presence can be spread out and heard.
