Help the Sandy Hook C.C. 2018

Donation protected
This 2018 GoFundMe campaign, our 3rd such campaign, is now closed. THANK YOU for helping us raise more than TWELVE THOUSAND DOLLARS through GoFundMe! Read on to see more! ( Tap " + Read More " ) ...

New donors: WELCOME TO THE TEAM!

Past donors: WELCOME BACK TO THE TEAM!

Community members and businesses have raised more than TWELVE THOUSAND DOLLARS through our two previous GoFundMe campaigns. With your support we have been able to get some MAJOR projects done:

-          A complete rebuild of the north wall and windows

-          An addition of a ramp to increase accessibility of the building

-          Plumbing repairs and upgrades

-          Electrical upgrades

-          Ventilation repairs and upgrades

In addition to the work that YOU accomplished with your donations, we wish to acknowledge the RM of Gimli for their support in providing lumber for projects, and for purchasing a new shed to replace our very much deteriorated old shed. That new shed will be ready for the 2018 season!

The focus for this year’s GoFundMe revolves around structural improvements for the building. If you’ve been dancing at any of the many SHCC socials, you may have noticed a little additional “bounce” beyond the bounce of your awesome dancing. Well, that is our sub-floor flexing (the framing underneath the floor), and it needs to be checked, given some attention, and adjusted. This project involves a contractor going under the building, assessing the beams and floor joists, and then upgrading or replacing them as necessary. Much like our GoFundMe-powered north wall project, it’s not possible to know the extent of this sub-floor project until we get started, open things up, and see where we’re at.

To start the sub-floor project off, we have a FABULOUS FIVE-THOUSAND DOLLAR GRANT from the Westshore Foundation, and our goal with this GoFundMe is to raise a MATCHING AMOUNT from the COMMUNITY: another FIVE THOUSAND DOLLARS! We are confident that this project will cost at least that amount ($10,000) once it is completed. The completion of this project will add greatly to the longevity of our building, which has a big, Big, BIG EVENT coming up next year in 2019: THE SANDY HOOK COMMUNITY CLUB CENTENNIAL!!... so please help us all be ready for THE PARTY OF THE CENTURY, and for many more celebrations for many years to come!!!
Thanks SO MUCH to the Westshore Foundation for getting this project started, and thanks to YOU, our 2018 GoFundMe Team, for stepping up to match that support so that YOUR SHCC building is in fabulous shape for many, many years to come!

Please read on for a detailed description of the SHCC: the organization, its history, the people, the building, and what we do…

WHO WE ARE, WHAT WE DO

The Sandy Hook Community Club (SHCC), located at the lakefront of 10th Avenue in Sandy Hook, Manitoba, Canada, provides robust seasonal programming for children, families, and adults. It is an active hub of community engagement through which community spirit is built and life-long friendships are forged and nurtured.

Annual events include pancake breakfasts, bingo nights, family movie nights, talent shows, karaoke nights, dances, and rummage sales. There are two major staple events hosted by the SHCC and its volunteer Board that are iconic to the community: a no-cost Family Field Day on the August long weekend that brings together generations of families for a spirited and inclusive day of friendly races and games, and a Community Corn Roast on the September long weekend that brings together friends and neighbours to celebrate and reflect on the summer that was, and on decades of summers past.

In addition to these many events, a major focus of the SHCC is to provide an exciting, enriching, and affordable Summer Day Camp for area children, nurturing life-long bonds of friendship that transcend neighbourhoods, cities, provinces, and even countries.

Additionally the Sandy Hook Community Club took the lead in ensuring the ongoing existence of The Famous Sandy Hook Pier. For 79 years this beautiful, functional, iconic Interlake landmark has been constructed every spring for the use and enjoyment of all, and every fall it has been deconstructed and stored to prevent it from being destroyed by shifting lake ice in the winter. When the local government stepped back from providing this historic amenity in 2009, the Sandy Hook Community Club stepped up to play a vital role in advocating for its continued existence by assisting to arrange for its construction, maintenance, deconstruction, and winter storage. The SHCC is grateful for the ongoing, caring expertise of Sundance Construction, as well as for the elbow grease of generations of volunteers. The SHCC is also grateful to The Famous Sandy Hook Pier Committee (a separate organization from the SHCC), for taking on the roles and responsibilities related to The Famous Sandy Hook Pier going forward. You are all so crucial to this important and ongoing heritage project. Thank you!

OUR HISTORY

The SHCC’s rich history as Manitoba's oldest, longest running volunteer-based and owned community club dates back to 1919, proudly opening the doors on its first building in 1928. That original building was claimed by lake erosion, which led to the construction of a replacement building in 1972 that is still in use today: 46 years and counting! Over the past decade the SHCC building has undergone extensive, expensive maintenance and repairs that have included structural, plumbing, electrical, siding, roofing, windows, and eaves troughs work. Ongoing maintenance and upgrading of this well-utilized facility is necessary we we continue to serve the community, as we have for nearly a century.

OUR FUNDRAISING

The SHCC actively fundraises through annual sales of membership calendars, through fundraising events such as pancake breakfasts, through sales of “Sandy Hooker” clothing and accessories, and by actively pursuing grants. Even with all of these fundraising efforts, the financial needs of the SHCC strain the organization, needs that are all about serving the community.

In the wake of municipal funding disappointments in 2015, the SHCC volunteer Board of Directors continued to search out new ways of fundraising. This is what led us to “GoFundMe”. We are grateful that the community has embraced this convenient, secure opportunity to visibly and tangibly express support of the SHCC. Your financial donation and other messages of support are shared extensively through the internet and through SHCC events, and will continue to do so. For those who do not want to be recognised for their donation, you can also donate anonymously through GoFundMe.
Thank you for your ongoing support, and we'll see you at The Hook!
