Hi everyone. This is Shay and I’m contacting you on behalf of my friend Sandra (Sandy) Belavilas. She needs your help to get some specialized treatment that may save her life and help her to go on caring for her son.
If you know Sandy, you know she is a hard-working woman and a devoted mom of a special needs son who's unable to fully care for himself. You may not know that she's endured some hardships that would swamp most of us.
As a young married woman with small babies, she suddenly started experiencing bouts of blindness and paralysis of parts of her body.
After many tests, the doctors determined she had Relapsing – Intermittent Multiple Sclerosis. For many years she prevailed against the disease, working hard, never missing an assignment, typing with one hand when she had to, and never letting the condition stop her.
One of Sandy's boys — some of you know Telly -- tragically had an accident when he was two and was brought back to life by the paramedics. After several weeks of Telly in a coma and six months of semi-coma, Sandy and her husband were told to take Telly home and that he would probably be a vegetable the rest of his life. Together, Sandy and her husband put their son on a rigorous home-therapy program and although he will never be perfectly well, today he's the joy of her life and she and all those around her are so thankful he's alive. She will always have him in the home with her since he can't take fully care of himself.
Then came the third great hardship. Sandy's husband of 36 years fought Follicular Lymphoma, then 4th stage breast cancer and finally ALS which took everything from him little by little. The recession in Las Vegas took their business and left her to sell their building, equipment and vehicles while taking her husband to multiple medical appointments daily. After he passed, she sold her house and moved back home to California with Telly.
Now Sandy's multiple sclerosis has gotten worse. Her doctors say she’s moving into progressive MS, which will compromise her ability to care for herself and Telly and may threaten her life. They want to put her on the same chemotherapy her husband had for his lymphoma and she says she just can’t go through such a debilitating and questionable treatment.
There's an amazing medical center, Sanoviv (www.sanoviv.com), that has had fantastic success with MS treatment. They say that if Sandy can get there before she's wheelchair bound, there’s a high level that she can be helped. Because many of its therapies are European and not FDA-based, the treatments aren’t covered by insurance. Sandy says a chance to go there would be a gift beyond words or gratitude.
While a complete round of MS therapy is costly, anything you can do to help will be so appreciated. We’ll keep on keeping on until the money is raised.
Sandy says, "It’s a lot harder to say than most people realize until they're faced with it themselves: ‘I need help.’”
If there’s a chance you can help, here’s the link to do it. And no matter what, thank you for caring.
