Help the Couffers Fight & Recover
On the morning of July 22, grandparents Jack and Sandy took their 12-month-old granddaughter, Chloe, and Jack's service dog, Zoe, on a morning walk—the same short walk they made each morning to their nearby home while Chloe's parents began their work day. Without notice, a car struck them on the sidewalk before the driver ran from the scene on foot.
Sandy was rushed to the ICU while Chloe was monitored closely for a head injury at Phoenix Children's Hospital and Jack was treated for a broken foot. While the family was unable to see each other in the trauma unit due to Covid precautions, Sandy was already undergoing her first life-saving surgery. Having taken the worst impact from the motorist, she suffered multiple injuries including broken ribs, pelvis, collar bone, arm, wrist, and a shattered femur which severed the femoral artery in her leg. Her gallbladder was removed along with her right kidney and half her liver. She was intubated since she could not breathe on her own. Since Wednesday, Sandy has continued to fight through multiple surgeries until internal bleeding was finally stopped. She remains unable to breathe unassisted.
Sweet Zoe also underwent orthopedic surgery with a specialist to treat multiple broken bones and lacerations. She is recovering at home with Jack and Chloe's parents, Shannon and Brent Couffer. She will have another upcoming surgery on her paw.
At this time, the family is in serious need of your donations to help with skyrocketing medical costs as well as attorney fees. Though the end is nowhere in sight, they roughly estimate between $250,000 and $500,000 in costs so far, including physical therapy and after care for Sandy while she recovers.
While Jack eagerly awaits daily updates about his beloved, he asks for any happy memories, stories, pictures or videos you can share about Sandy and the family. Updates will be added to this page so you can follow everyone's recovery. Please send to him directly at [email redacted] or share on this page's comments.
Please help in any way you are able. Thank you!
