A little over a week ago my mom’s life changed overnight. She was rushed to the hospital with a severe infection from a past knee surgery, that later turned into a second infection in her shoulder. Her condition became septic, and for a while, the doctors weren’t sure if she would make it. By some miracle and her own strength, she pulled through.

She has spent days in the hospital on IV antibiotics, unable to walk or take care of herself. When she was finally stable enough to be transferred to a rehabilitation center, we thought she was on the road to recovery. But now we’re facing another battle—this time with her insurance company.

Despite the fact that she still cannot walk independently, use the bathroom without full assistance, or safely return home, her insurance is refusing to cover her stay at the rehab center. They are calling it “not medically necessary,” even though her doctors strongly disagree. Without this care, she risks falling, reinfection, and another hospitalization.

As her power of attorney, I’ve been fighting hard to appeal the denial, but the financial pressure is already crushing. Out-of-pocket costs for rehab are overwhelming and far beyond what our family can manage on our own.
