Sandra's Urgent Need for Home Safety Upgrades

Sandra need’s your help in making her home safe for her.

Hello, my name is Sandra Padilla, and I truly need your help. I am currently suffering from a disease called encephalitis which is, by definition, the swelling of the brain. However, it is also an autoimmune disease that has compromised my immune system which results in me becoming sick from the smallest of ailments. To treat this disease, the specialists recommended me to receive gamunix-c IVIG infusions which I have been receiving for over 8 years. Unfortunately, after 8 years, this has caused severe kidney failure in my body and now I must be placed on home dialysis. While that process itself is challenging, the real problem is my home: it is not safe for me in its current condition. The lack of safety handles in the upstairs/downstairs bathrooms, a bathtub that I can no longer get into and out of safely, the tiles in the kitchen and bathrooms, and the staircase I can no longer safely climb have all created an unsafe environment in my home. After multiple falls and injuries, I reached out to multiple agencies to see what help I can receive to fix these issues in the house. Unfortunately, my age prevents me from qualifying for Medicaid, and although I am fully disabled and receiving disability benefits, I don't qualify for the state/federally funded programs that could assist me in these renovations and repairs. I've made several calls into what the cost would be to make my home safe, and the cost is estimated to be between $40,000 and $50,000. Because of my disease and the kidney failure, I am unable to work, and I cannot receive a loan from the bank without a steady source of income. My disability benefits and income barely keep the lights on, so I must do something that I hate to do which is asking for help. I've always been independent and self-sufficient having raised my nieces and nephew as a single adult, but my situation has forced me to swallow my pride and reach out for assistance. Your help would be greatly appreciated and would be going towards the cost of:

* Installing a chair lift which would allow me to get to the bedrooms, both of which are located on the 2nd floor.

* Installing handrails and safety guards in the bathrooms and bedrooms.

* Replacing the tiled flooring and installing new, slip-resistant flooring in the kitchen and bathrooms.

* Fixing the walkway outside of the house where it is broken and lifted in several places.

* Removing the bathtub and installing a standing shower with seating/handrails.
