My sister and your friend, Sandra is one of the strongest, most determined people we know. She was diagnosed with breast cancer at 40 years of age. Over the last 15 years, she has endured many surgeries, chemo/Herceptin infusions, thousands of blood draws and 43 radiation treatments with grace, humor, and incredible perseverance. While some of the treatment plan is covered by our medical system other components are not. I felt compelled to draw on our amazing community & pull together! What an amazing gift we could give the person who has given so much of herself in support of others! Every donation, big or small, will help her receive the support she needs. Sandra is such a loving and supportive friend to so many people, and I know our community will want to shower her with love & support in return during this challenging time.
During the last 15 years, her family has been able to navigate the financial burdens with steady health insurance through her and Rick’s employers. However, due to a Stage 4 diagnosis in April 2023, she retired in July 2024 on full disability. Sandra’s appointments, treatments, scans & blood draws have increased trifold, and she is unable to keep up. Thankfully, in Oct/Nov, her SSDI Medicare will kick in, so we need to come together & help her through these next few months.
Sandra has been working so hard trying to keep up paying bills from Aspirus and CW Radiologists by selling on eBay & Marketplace, but it is just not cutting it and there are eBay/SSDI monthly income limit restrictions. She truly has been (and still is!) giving it her all to NOT have to ask for help.
Cancer and treatment are horrible enough things to go through, but to have to worry about rent, mortgage, copays, deductibles and bills on top of treatment costs is a huge added stress - a stress that we are asking for your help with! We are hoping our community can help ease the financial burden for Sandra and Rick as they face this physically and mentally exhausting challenge.
If you made it this far, we thank you for reading and caring! We appreciate any help that can be offered, share with your loved ones and family! God bless you! XO
SANDRA’S STORY
Sandra’s breast cancer journey began in 2010, Stage 1, hormone negative, Her2+, (lumpectomy, chemotherapy, Herceptin, 36 radiations).
2016, Stage 2, Triple Negative, (chemotherapy, double mastectomy, reconstruction-2018). Chemo ended 3 cycles early due to congestive heart failure (recovered). This was an extremely hard decision; however, the treatment was killing her.
2023, Sandra had her usual 6-month scan and revealed a large lung tumor. Subsequent scans/biopsy revealed Stage 4 Triple Negative Metastatic Breast Cancer, which is incurable/terminal. In April, she had surgical removal of her upper left lung (lobectomy).
As Signatera/Natera blood test results continued to rise it was a matter of time before the cancer showed up on scans. A year went by, just waiting for it to rear its ugly head somewhere as each test result rose, and it did….
2024, Sandra was having back pain. Scan and biopsy revealed a metastatic tumor. Five high-dose radiations were prescribed. In November of 2024, a follow-up scan revealed more metastatic tumors in both lungs. Her oncologist put her on a targeted therapy drug (Vitrakvi/Larotrectinib). This drug is for a rare NTRK3 gene mutation which signals cancer cells to grow….and will hopefully SLOW the progression. Next scan is in early February. If satisfactory results, we will continue with current treatment. If not-so good, then we decide next steps, most likely chemo. There is another targeted therapy which may be a viable option. New things are coming out ALL THE TIME!
Unfortunately, due to being PDL1-Negative, Sandra is NOT eligible for immunotherapy. Currently, Vitrakvi and chemotherapy are the only options. At this time, the goal is not curative intent, but palliative treatment to slow progression, pain & symptoms.
