SANCTUARY - Straight8 Film Festival entry

Hi all! My name is Amy Lowe Starbin and I'm a filmmaker based in Los Angeles. I’m raising funds for SANCTUARY, a horror short about a woman who flees an unnatural threat by seeking refuge in an empty church – but soon finds she is not alone.

I plan to use one actress and a 3-person crew led by a female cinematographer. Funds will go towards paying my talented cast and crew, and cover camera rental and entry fees, as well as expenses like insurance and food. [***UPDATED: our new stretch goal helps to pay an additional crew member, as well as cover some film festival entry fees.]

SANCTUARY IS inspired by the invigorating challenge of the Straight8 Festival, which dares filmmakers to tell their story using only one cartridge of Super-8 film. Yes, the same stuff folks used to shoot home movies on back in the day! The film will have a runtime of just over three minutes, and the story has to be shot in order: no edits, no post, and no live sound recorded. Sound crazy? It is, but this festival has been running for over 20 years now and they’ve produced some amazing films. The top 25 films chosen are premiered in London, where the filmmakers see their developed film for the first time with an audience. The top 8 will play the Cannes Film Festival.

My previous short film, LOS ALIENS, played festivals throughout 2020-2021 including the First Contact Festival (where we won an award for Best Supporting Actor) and the Uppsala Short Film Festival in Sweden, where it competed for Best Children’s Film.
