The Sanctuary Scholarship is awarded to a Massachusetts Senior from Somerville High School who shows great leadership and career success potential by continuing onto higher education. This scholarship celebrates someone who is foreign born and cannot qualify for federal student aid. Despite difficult challenges, the scholarship recipient continues to work hard, engage in their high school/ local community and has brought their best self forward to succeed. In their motivation and success, they have created a path for others to do the same. This scholarship is named in Memory of Darlene Nicgorski (11/19/43- 02/28/2017) who served many immigrant and refugee residents from the City of Somerville for well over a decade in the 90s through her work at SCALE and AMES. Outside of Somerville, Darlene is known internationally for her tireless fight for equity, justice and sanctuary for immigrants and refugees. This scholarship celebrates her voice for opportunity and justice . Her story and work can be found in the Special Collections section of Honnold Mudd Library of the Claremont Colleges, Claremont, CA
