This has been an emotionally and financially draining week.
Over the past couple of months, we have taken in four rabbits (1 male & 3 females). Once their initial visits were complete and they were deemed healthy enough, their lifesaving spay/neuter surgeries were scheduled.
Anytime anyone has surgery, I worry, as there can always be complications. Rabbit surgeries are especially risky and require specialized veterinary care. Fortunately for us, our vet has a huge amount of experience. Even still, my little Momma heart was a wreck.
On Monday, Jeff, Ann, Cotton & Stevie all had successful surgeries and are home healing! Their vet bill was $927.28.
On Tuesday, we received another delivery of straw. We're expecting a big snowstorm and cold front this weekend so it's essential we have plenty of straw on hand to keep everyone cozy. The cost was $350.
On Wednesday, our sweet elderly Ava told me it was time. My heart broke but I knew it was inevitable as she was at least 10-12 years old.
Ava joined us in March of 2020 along with three other sheep. They were all emaciated, covered in feces/urine and the three females were all pregnant unbeknownst to us. Ava was early in her pregnancy, so she had enough time with us to get healthy before delivering her perfect little lamb, Sky. They both have lived a life free from pain and suffering since the day they arrived. I intended to keep that promise, so when Ava showed me the signs, I listened.
Once again, our amazing vet jumped right into action and got us right in that day. Even though euthanasia can be a difficult subject, it truly is part of vet care and a gift that can bring peace. Once our vet saw Ava, she agreed her little body had given all it could and we let her go peacefully, surrounded by people who cared deeply about her. A piece of my heart will always belong to her.
Ava's final bill was $157.
Running a sanctuary has many facets but one of the most difficult is having to live through trauma/death and then having to ask for help to cover the costs. Unfortunately, it's a necessity and crucial for us to be able to continue to care for the almost 100 lives who call Jenkins Forever Farm home.
If you're able to donate, every dollar helps! Jenkins Forever Farm is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit, so your donation is tax deductible!
Thank you from me and the residents of JFF!
