Hi everyone,

My name is Jaime Chuidian, and on July 24, 2022, I will be running the San Francisco Marathon to raise money for a service organization called PREP (Promoting Rural Education Philippines). PREP is a student-run organization that seeks to inspire young, low-income students in the rural Philippines to find joy and value in learning. PREP is an initiative that provides better learning resources such as tablets, books, and student mentors (like myself) to foster relationships with these young kids and act as role models to ignite their passion for education and learning!

Prior to the pandemic, 2 out of 5 high school graduates would choose not to pursue higher education in the Philippines. COVID has catalyzed this problem a step further. According to a study by LSE, over three million students in the Philippines have dropped out and have no plans to return to school in 2020. The spike in schooling drop-outs arises from a loss of interest in learning, lack of motivation, underfunded education programs, and income inequality for which students feel the need to contribute to the family income. These are only a few of the many factors that have driven these kids in the Rural Philippines out of school. I want to do everything that I can to incentivize students to get back into the classroom and discover the beauty and importance of learning and education.

PREP has made a massive impact on my life, and I want to have that same impact on another student’s life. For this purpose, I hope to raise $5000 for PREP. The money raised will be donated directly to local schools in the rural Philippines to equip their students with better resources for learning both in-person and remotely. I genuinely owe who I am and how far I have come to these students and teachers who helped me find my love for learning and inspire me to keep chasing new heights.
