On Thursday the 29th, our friend John Howard had to rush to the vet to take his best friend Sam to the Emergency Room.
John texted this update that afternoon:
At ER now. Sam is stable and conscious. We went into the vet this morning after I saw a weird bruise on him. During the visit they took blood and found zero platelets. They noticed a hematoma at the site to draw blood. Took more blood, still no platelets.
He has almost no ability to form blood clots. Could be autoimmune, could be infection.
He needs a blood transfusion, antibiotics, and another medication in case it is autoimmune related. 48 hour observation period to start.
5 Days later, Monday the 3rd:

Latest update is that Sam is napping next to me after another round of treatment.
He is overall improved today but our platelet count is lower than yesterday which is the underlying issue causing all the bleeding.
We started him on a new drug to try to get platelet production started again. We’re keeping him in the ER overnight for observation. Not sure if we’re doing anymore tests tonight. We’ll see what bloodwork looks like tomorrow and go from there.
Under the fur he looks like this, normally that skin is light pink:

Why we're doing this and what we're asking:
John is not just a friend, he's RED family and Sam has been part of that family from the beginning.
Many of us know that, unfortunately, vet bills can be just as expensive as hospital bills and most of the time, they aren't covered with insurance.
John and Sam have been through a lot these last several months, so we'd like to show them that their RED family is here to help.
Please contribute what you can and share this GoFundMe with everyone that knows and loves John Howard and our boy Samwise the Brave.
