Sammy Coleman, husband, father, grandfather, brother, and beloved Starkville, Mississippi figure---was badly injured in a car/motorcycle accident on Sunday, September 22. He was airlifted to University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson. 

There he remains in critical care 

It could happen to any of us. Imagine it. One minute you're enjoying a breezy ride on a beautiful day---and the next you're fighting for your life and being airlifted by helicopter to a trauma hospital. 

So far, Sammy has endured excruciatingly long hours on the operating table as family sat anxiously for news. Success!  The surgeons and medical teams at University have worked absolute miracles on his broken left leg and right ankle, as well as his shattered pelvis and torn bladder.  Sammy has received multiple blood transfusions, scores of medications, lab work,  X-rays, numerous CT scans and constant vigil by the staff as they've responded to his needs. 

The medical heroes at University are doing everything in their power to save Sammy.

Man About Town

Sammy has always been tough as a pine knot. For years, his job as a tow truck driver for Starkville  Ford, now Cannon Ford of Starkville, has required him to respond, day or night, rain or shine, to stranded motorists with broken-down or wrecked cars or law enforcement officers enforcing parking violations. No matter how many calls he answered in the wee hours, Sammy was almost always the first at the dealership, making coffee and working on cars as a mechanic. 

Folks around  town know Sammy for his ready smile and friendliness. And, yes, his legendary stubbornness. It's that hard-headedness all of us who love Sammy pray helps him win in this battle for his life. 

Ever-Mounting Medical Bills

Sammy and his hospital team are doing everything they can to restore his injured body. The reality, however, is that there is always a parallel story that accompanies medical miracles---astronomical healthcare costs. Along with everything else that's happened, the family has the nagging worry of how Sammy's healthcare bills will be paid. 

Virtually everyone has encountered the sticker shock from a new prescription or an unexpected procedure. Multiply that many times over for the kind of life-saving medical care our Sammy is receiving.
