Sam Thompson disappeared on March 7th 2017. His parents, Bruce and Debbie were alerted by friends that Sam, a prolific social media user, was not answering his phone. Sam was reported as a ‘missing person’ on Thursday March 9th . Media coverage started on Friday March 10th. Quickly this escalated into Brisbane’s largest police investigation, with 60 detectives working around the clock on the case. On what would have been Sam’s 23rd birthday, the second of two men were arrested for Sam’s murder. The police investigation is ongoing.
Sam was a typical Brisbane suburban lad who grew up in a loving family with one sister, two years his junior, Courtney. Sam attended Virginia State Primary School and later local high schools. Sam and Courtney were involved in sporting pursuits; Sam’s being ice hockey, where he represented Queensland. Bruce and Debbie were both tireless volunteers for their children’s swimming, netball and hockey clubs. Bruce was Virginia State School’s P & C president and Debbie was the canteen co-ordinator for many years. They were both enthusiastic volunteers who fundraised for many of these clubs.
Sam was “a big kid” himself and his chosen career as a Childcare worker suited his demeanour. Sam worked at various childcare centres around Northgate and Clayfield since leaving school. He did find his place in the world and moved in and out of home as finances permitted. He was a popular and friendly boy who loved animals. The Thompson household was filled with Sam’s latest pets, and friends crashing on the floor, often for weeks on end. The Thompson household was a lively and fun place to be.
The Thompsons have attracted many, many friends with their always welcome attitudes. Bruce and Debbie have had a tough couple of years of late, prior to Sam’s disappearance, so I ask we envelop them in our support. The money raised will go to Bruce and Debbie to assist them in farewelling their beloved Sammy, and potentially buy them a little freedom from financial hardship.
