Original STORY:
Hello all! I'm looking for help with the research trip(s) I'll be making to Orlando in mid-July (and beyond). I'm heading down there with jazz journalist Ed Hazell, and we'll spend seven full days at the RivBea Archive preparing the coming book version of my Sam Rivers Sessionography. Sam's daughter Monique has 40 bins full of material—Studio RivBea schedules, photographs, correspondence, tour lists, memorabilia, scores, and who knows what else— and we'll be going through it with our laptops, scanners, and hard drives so we can carry it home and build a book worthy of Sam's legacy. If we have time and actually get through all of that, there are additional resources that will be available to us in RivBea Manager Matt Gorney's and RivBea Orchestra's Doug Mathews' archives.
I currently drive a 20-hr. week on my Montessori school bus, and I'm unemployed in the Summer, living on a fixed-income early retirement SS benefit, so while my monthly living expenses are met, I do need to raise some extra funds so I can afford to make this and any future trips. If successful beyond my stated goal, I'll be able to think about possible further excursions to Boston for the Globe Archive, or Joe Daley's house for Tuba Trio era materials, etc...
Any amount is greatly appreciated. I need to cover nine days worth of food + coffee, a flight + hotel room, and a Multi-Terrabyte Hard Drive to store all of this information.
In the meantime, to give you an idea of the work I'm doing (in addition to the 1st-run mass reformat+edit that's now done up to 1988), these are the things I've been adding and refining since the year began and I came down with the Sam Rivers Fever :::
Thank you SO MUCH for your time and consideration on this. I couldn't possibly do what I've been doing without the help of the hundreds of people around the world who send me session info and gig dates and details and anecdotes.
Here are a few phone messages to me from Sam, and then "Beatrice" to take us OUT.
xoxoxo,
—RL
