On the morning of December 26 my brother Sam woke up not feeling well and shortly after, suffered a stroke. He was taken by ambulance to a hospital in Dickinson. There was not a cardiologist on staff, and it was determined that he would need to be transported to Bismarck or Fargo. Because he had a significant brain bleed, it was decided he'd be transported to Fargo via air ambulance. Due to fog and heavy snow between Dickinson and Fargo, Sam was transported on a fixed wing air ambulance instead of by helicopter. He arrived in Fargo and his medical team at Sanford Medical Center began work on him immediately. Sam's supervisors from Dickinson Parks and Recreation gathered Heather (Sam's wife), Rylee (13), and Max (10) and their vehicle and brought them to Fargo once Sam was taken to the airport for the flight of his life. Sam's bleed is stable, he has some swelling in his brain due to the bleed. His CT scans have continued to show improvement. He is paralyzed on his right side. His prognosis is very positive, but he will require extensive inpatient rehabilitation, which will take place in Fargo. Immediate needs for Sam and his family are things like travel expenses back and forth to Fargo. It is hard to project medical expenses or set a fundraising goal for something like this before we know what insurance will cover or what exactly Sam will need, as he is still currently in the ICU. This is a start. We will share updates on Sammy's journey here. Your prayers, well wishes, and support so far have been such a blessing and gift!
