A pandemia COVID-19 continua, sem medo, a espalhar-se por todo o mundo. Simultaneamente, várias medidas estão a ser tomadas pelos diferentes governos - encerramento de fronteiras, cancelamento de voos, auto-isolamento, reforço dos sistemas de saúde e medidas preventivas para combater a propagação do vírus. Todos nos comprometemos todos os dias a lutar contra esta ameaça invisível, mas os residentes dos campos de refugiados nas Ilhas do mar Egeu não têm a oportunidade de se proteger.
As condições de vida nos campos de refugiados já eram desumanas muito antes do início da pandemia. Devido à sobrepopulação, falta de condições higieno-sanitárias, alimentação deficitária e assistência médica insuficiente, as populações que vivem em campos de refugiados são especialmente vulneráveis à doença COVID-19.
Neste ambiente, medidas comumente usadas, como práticas de higiene através da lavagem frequente das mãos e distanciamento social, são completamente inviáveis. Se e quando o vírus chegar aos campos, as consequências serão catastróficas. As nossas preocupações e medidas para conter o surto não devem negligenciar as milhares de pessoas que vivem à mercê da indiferença política.
Nenhuma das ilhas gregas, que acolhem no seu total cerca de 42.000 migrantes e requerentes de asilo, está preparada para uma crise de saúde pública desta escala. De acordo com organizações médicas que trabalham no campo de refugiados de Moria em Lesbos, um surto de COVID-19 no campo pode propagar-se rapidamente, levando a um número exponencial de pessoas infectadas dentro de 10 dias. Se assumirmos a taxa de mortalidade de 3%, prevê-se que pelo menos 1100 pessoas possam morrer.
A ONG médica Kitrinos Healthcare já identificou cerca de 500 casos vulneráveis no campo de Moria - 200 dos quais incluídos na população idosa e 300 com doenças crónicas pré-existentes (hipertensão, diabetes, cancro, etc.). Todos eles podem precisar de cuidados médicos diferentes se infetados.
Em Lesbos, o único hospital na capital Mitiline está sob forte pressão desde que a crise humanitária e de refugiados atingiu o pico em 2015, atualmente possui apenas 6 camas de cuidados intensivos, no Hospital da ilha de Samos também o mesmo número.
Por todas estas razões, reconhecemos a urgência da nossa solidariedade e humanidade.
Esta campanha tem como objetivo angariar fundos para apoiar cinco ONGs médicas que trabalham nos campos de refugiados de Lesbos (Boat Refugee Foundation, Kitrinos Healthcare, Medical Volunteers International and Health Point Foundation ) e Samos (Med EqualiTeam ), no fortalecimento da resposta às necessidades emergentes que esta população enfrenta diante desta pandemia.
Ao doar para a nossa campanha, vais apoiar estas ONGs a adqurir os seguintes produtos:
15,000 € para EPI (Equipamento de Proteção Individual, incluindo máscaras, luvas, batas, aventais) e equipamento médico diverso (incluindo termómetros, kits de infusão, oxímetros, desinfetantes para as mãos e álcool)
10,000 € para medicamentos (incluindo analgésicos, anti-inflamatórios, oxigénio)
5,000 € para apoiar as equipas no terreno, dos quais muitos são profissionais residentes dos campos (incluindo alimentação, acomodação, custos operacionais, transporte...)
Reconhecemos que face à sobrepopulação e às condições tão precárias, um surto de COVID-19 neste contexto vai ser catastrófico. Por isso, para o sucesso destas medidas preventivas, reforçamos a necessidade urgente de evacuação dos campos de refugiados, especialmente a evacuação imediata da população de risco e mais vulnerável, incluindo pessoas acima dos 60 anos, pessoas com doenças crónicas, mulheres grávidas e menores não acompanhados.
Reconhecemos que, face à inércia por parte da União Europeia e respetivos Estados Membros relativamente à crise humanitária que se vive nestas ilhas gregas, este esforço e solidariedade por parte da sociedade civil, ainda que possa ser insuficiente, é mais do que nunca, urgente!
Relembramos-te que, ainda que estejamos em isolamento, a solidariedade não faz quarentena.

The COVID-19 pandemic has been spreading fearlessly all around the world. Simultaneously, severe measures are being taken by governments - closing borders, canceling flights, self-isolation, strengthening health systems - in order to prevent and fight the spread of the virus. We all commit everyday to battle this invisible threat, but the residents of refugee camps on the Aegean Islands do not have the opportunity to protect themselves.
The living conditions in refugee camps have been inhumane long before the pandemic started. Due to overcrowding, lack of hygienic and sanitary conditions, malnutrition and insufficient medical care, populations living in refugee camps are especially vulnerable to the COVID-19 disease.
In this environment, measures employed in other countries such as proper hygiene practices and social distancing are completely unfeasible. If and when then the virus will get to the camps, the consequences will be catastrophic. Our concerns, policies and measures to contain the outbreak should not neglect the thousands of people living in these landscapes of political forgetfulness.
None of the islands hosting around 42,000 migrants and asylum seekers is prepared for a health crisis on this scale. According to medical organizations working in Moria refugee camp on Lesvos, an outbreak of COVID-19 in the camp could quickly escalate, leading to exponential numbers of infected people within 10 days. If we assume a 3% mortality rate, it is expected that at least 1100 people would die.
The medical NGO Kitrinos Healthcare has already identified around 500 vulnerable cases in Moria camp - 200 of which among the elder population and 300 with pre-existing medical conditions (hypertension, diabetes, cancer, etc). All of them may come to need different medical care if infected.
On Lesvos, the only hospital in the capital Mytilene has been under severe pressure since the migrant crisis peaked in 2015 and currently has only 6 Intensive Care Units; Samos Hospital has also just 6 ICU beds.
For all these reasons, we recognize the urgency for our solidarity and humanity.
This campaign aims to raise funds to support 5 grassroots medical NGOs working in the refugee camps of Lesvos (Boat Refugee Foundation , Kitrinos Healthcare , Medical Volunteers International and Health Point Foundation ) and Samos (Med EqualiTeam ), in strengthening the response to emerging needs in the face of this pandemic.
By donating to our campaign, you are directly supporting those NGOs to purchase the following items:
15,000 € for PPE (Personal Protective Equipment, including masks, gloves, gowns) and medical equipment (i.e. thermometers, infusion sets, oximeters, hand sanitizers and rubbing alcohol)
10,000 € for medication (i.e. analgesic, anti inflammatory, oxygen)
5,000 € to support the teams on the ground, of whom many are professionals residents of the camps (i.e. food, accommodation, operational costs, transports)
We still acknowledge that in such overcrowded and precarious conditions, the outbreak of COVID-19 will be a catastrophe. To ensure the success of these preventive measures, we strongly reinforce the urgent need for camp evacuation, especially the immediate evacuation of the population at high risk and most vulnerable, including people older than 60, people with chronic illness, pregnant women and unaccompanied minors.
We recognize that, given the European Union’s and its Member States inertia regarding the humanitarian crisis on the Greek islands, this effort and solidarity from civil society, although it may seem insufficient, is, more than ever, urgent!
Even in isolation we remind you that our solidarity is not on lockdown.
