Salvando a Leia - Saving Leia (cancer treatment)

Hola, mi nombre es Reinaldo y cree este fundraiser para poder para poder pagar la cirugia/radiacion y el tratamiento general de mi perrita Leia contra contra el cancer (osteosarcoma) que le detectaron esta semana.

Desde hace años me tocó mudarme mucho por mi carrera artística y durante mi estadía en Colombia, conocí a mi perrita en un refugio, a la que yo pensé que yo estaría salvando al salir de ahí con ella, pero 10 años después, me doy cuenta que ella es la que me ha salvado a mi todos estos años. Así que ahora me toca a mi hacer todo lo posible para salvarla a ella. No sólo ha sido mi relación más constante, pero mi compañera de aventuras! Hemos visto la arena, la montaña y la nieve juntos. Hemos vivido momentos increibles y nunca he llorado solo gracias a ella.

Hace un mes, Leia empezó a cogear un poco con la pata de atrás y el domingo pasado cuando volvíamos del parque, empezó a llorar de una forma que yo nunca la había visto quejarse, tratando de sentarse. Tanto que me motivó a llevarla a la emergencia donde, luego de sacarle radiografías, le encontraron osteosarcoma en un hueso de la cadera:

Después de discutir varias opciones para su tratamiento con varios veterinarios decidimos tratarla en el Veterinary Cancer Group en Culver City, y pensando que su salud está increíble apartando el cancer, encontramos que el mejor camino para atacar el cancer de Leia es dividirlo en dos batallas. Primero, la batalla local, usando una tecnica de radiación especializada que ataca con precisión las células cancerígenas, causando muchísimo menos daño a las células saludables comparado con la radiación convencional y luego la batalla general con quimioterapia, que es un tratamiento diferente al de los humanos con muy pocos efectos secundarios menores. Y sumado a todo esto, el Viernes tenemos una cita con cirugía oncológica para estudiar la posibilidad de primero sacar gran parte del tumor y parte de los huesos afectados.

Todo esto, sumado a un tratamiento holístico que ya empezamos con una dieta anti cancer, que tiene una combinación de suplementos para fortalecer su sistema, elementos para modificar el PH de su cuerpo para que el cancer se encuentre en un ambiente alcalino donde se le hará mucho más difícil avanzar y un hongo conocido como ¨Turkey Tail¨que tiene propiedades anticancerígenas.

Cada parte tratamiento tiene un costo aproximado de $6K-$9K, dependiendo de duración, repetición, etc. Más los exámenes que vienen en combos de $300-$1K cada vez y el tratamiento holístico de $700 mensual que debe tener por siempre. El gasto total podría estar alrededor de los $15K en los primeros 2 meses y $15K más a lo largo de dos años.

Osteosarcoma es un cancer en los huesos que avanza de manera agresiva y sin el tratamiento, Leia tiene tan sólo meses de vida, así que el actuar rápido es clave porque mejora sus chances de sobrevivir y tener una vida de muchos más roadtrips juntos! Es mucho dinero y nos da mucha pena pero yo se que los que la conocen, saben lo mucho que vale la pena esta perrita y lo mucho que vale los momentos que me da siempre. Así que salvándola a ella, les aseguro me están salvando a mi también!

Hi, my name is Reinaldo, and I started this fundraiser so I can pay for the surgery/radiation, chemo and general cancer (osteosarcoma) treatment for my little Leia.

Since a while back, I had to move a lot because of my artistic career, and during my stay in Colombia, I met this doggie in a shelter, who I thought I was rescuing by taking her with me, but 10 years later, I know that she's the one who's been saving me all along. So now it's my real chance to do everything I can to save her. And it's not only because she's been my most consistent relationship, but also my adventure partner! We've seen the sand, mountains and snow together! Lived incredible moments, and thanks to her, I've never cried alone.

About a month ago, Leia started limping and last Sunday, when we got home from the park, she started crying when trying to sit down in a way that concerned me so much to the point of taking her to the ER, where they found osteosarcoma in her hips.

After discussing multiple options with multiple vets for her treatment, we decided to treat her at the Veterinary Cancer Group in Culver City, and knowing that her health is incredible other than this, we found the best way to attack Leia's cancer by dividing it into two battles. First, the local battle, which we will attack mainly with stereotactic radiation therapy, which is a specialized type of radiation that attacks the cancer cells causing minimal damage to the healthy cells around it. Then a general battle led with chemotherapy, but accompanied with a holistic treatment which we already started switching her food to no carbs, veggies, immune system supplements and elements to modify the PH in her body and make it an environment hard for cancer to thrive. On top of everything, we're adding a mushroom called "Turkey Tail" that has anti-cancer properties to her daily diet. And Friday we have an oncologic surgery consultation to study the possibility of removing the tumour, a portion of it and the affected bone.

Each part of the treatment costs approximately $6K-$9K, depending on duration, repetition, etc. Plus all of the testing, which comes in $300-$1K combos every time, and the $700/month diet and holistic treatment, which has to be maintained forever.

Osteosarcoma is a very aggressive type of cancer and without any treatment, Leia only has months to live. It's a lot of money, and it's hard to do this, but it's a time-sensitive situation. The faster she starts the treatment, the better her chance of living and enjoying more roadtrips together! She's so worth it and the moments we share are so worth it. So, technically by saving her, you're also saving me.
