Ogni mamma dovrebbe poter dire al proprio bambino: “Ti aspetto, e sarai al sicuro.”

Ma in Uganda non è così. Qui una corsa disperata verso l’ospedale può decidere la vita o la morte.

Kuchwiny, Uganda. Alle 5:45 del 19 settembre 2025, Gloria, 18 anni e al termine della gravidanza, avvisa la madre: «Mamma, ci siamo». La famiglia vive a circa 10 km dal St.Luke Hospital di Angal. Non ci sono i soldi per l’ambulanza. La decisione è di salire su un boda-boda, una moto-taxi.

È ancora buio, la strada è sterrata e dissestata. La corsa si trasforma in pericolo. La moto esce di strada. Gloria e il piccolo Moses non arriveranno mai in ospedale.

Una tragedia che non deve più accadere.

COSA FACCIAMO:

Con questa raccolta fondi attiviamo un programma di voucher nominativi:
durante le visite prenatali al St.Luke Hospital di Angal, alle future mamme verrà consegnato un voucher intestato a loro e al bambino, che certifica che il trasporto in ambulanza è completamente gratuito e le rassicura che non dovranno pagare nulla quando inizia il travaglio.

Attualmente Il servizio ambulanza è gratuito solo per le mamme che hanno grossi problemi economici. Esiste il “fondo Samaritan” al quale l ospedale attinge quando si presentano casi di persone veramente molto molto povere che necessitano di un trasporto in ambulanza e/o cure ma purtroppo non è sufficiente per coprire anche i costi per il trasporto di tutte le partorienti e così il BodaTaxi resta il mezzo favorito per gli spostamenti.

I voucher servono a:

• Informare chiaramente le mamme dei loro diritti;

• Eliminare ogni dubbio sui costi;

• Garantire che l'ospedale possa sostenere economicamente questo servizio essenziale.

Un gesto semplice che può salvare due vite.

OBIETTIVO:

Vogliamo raccogliere 27.300 € per garantire un anno intero di arrivi sicuri alle mamme del territorio di Angal, coprendo i costi operativi del servizio ambulanza che offre l'ospedale.

Amici di Angal ODV è un Ente del Terzo Settore veronese, fondato da Mario e Claudia Marsiaj nel 2001 dopo 40 anni di volontariato nel Nord Uganda.

Il dott. Marsiaj, fondatore anche del Centro di Malattie Tropicali di Negrar, oggi in pensione, insieme alla moglie Claudia e al figlio Pierfrancesco, attuale presidente dell’associazione, continua a dirigere e sostenere le attività dall’Italia, coordinando l’operato dei volontari che portano avanti i progetti direttamente ad Angal (regione del West Nile, Nord Uganda).

Un impegno che ha permesso al St.Luke Hospital di Angal di diventare oggi il dodicesimo ospedale dell’Uganda per volume di attività.

Accanto all’ospedale, l’associazione sostiene la popolazione locale con diversi progetti sociali a favore di malati, poveri, disabili, bambini e mamme. Tra questi, la scuola St. Theresa di Angal, che accoglie anche bambini con disabilità visiva, motoria e intellettiva.

SAVE TWO LIVES: DONATE AN AMBULANCE RIDE TO ANGAL

Every mother should be able to tell her baby: “I’m waiting for you, and you will be safe.”

But in Uganda, this is not always the case. Here, a desperate ride to the hospital can decide between life and death.

Kuchwiny, Uganda. At 5:45 a.m. on September 19, 2025, Gloria, 18 years old and at the end of her pregnancy, told her mother: “Mum, it’s time.”

The family lives about 10 km from St. Luke Hospital in Angal. They didn’t have the money to pay for an ambulance. Their only option was to take a boda-boda, a motorcycle taxi.

It was still dark, the road unpaved and full of holes. The ride turned into danger. The motorcycle crashed.

Gloria and little Moses never made it to the hospital.

A tragedy that must never happen again.

WHAT WE DO:

With this fundraising campaign we are launching a voucher program: during prenatal visits at St. Luke Hospital in Angal, each expectant mother will receive a voucher in her name and her baby’s, certifying that the ambulance ride is completely free of charge. This reassures them that they will not have to pay anything when labor begins.

Currently, the ambulance service is free only for mothers with extreme economic hardship. The hospital can access the “Samaritan Fund” in cases of families who are extremely poor and in urgent need of ambulance transport or medical care. Unfortunately, this fund is not enough to cover the transport costs for all women giving birth, which is why the boda-boda remains the most common means of reaching the hospital.

The vouchers are meant to:

• Clearly inform mothers of their rights;

• Eliminate any doubts about costs;

• Ensure the hospital can financially sustain this essential service.

A simple gesture that can save two lives.

OUR GOAL:

We aim to raise €27,300 to guarantee a full year of safe arrivals for the mothers of Angal, covering the operational costs of the hospital ambulance service.

HOW THE FUNDS WILL BE USED:

• Funds will be allocated to the ambulance service of St. Luke Hospital in Angal to cover transportation costs for women in labor.

• Vouchers will be distributed during prenatal visits to inform and reassure mothers that the service is completely free.

WHO WE ARE: AMICI DI ANGAL ODV

Amici di Angal ODV is a Third Sector organization based in Verona, Italy, founded by Mario and Claudia Marsiaj in 2001 after 40 years of volunteering in Northern Uganda.

Dr. Marsiaj, also founder of the Center for Tropical Diseases in Negrar, now retired, together with his wife Claudia and their son Pierfrancesco, current president of the association, continues to lead and support the activities from Italy, while coordinating the volunteers who carry out the projects directly in Angal (West Nile region, Northern Uganda).

Their commitment has allowed St. Luke Hospital in Angal to become today the twelfth largest hospital in Uganda in terms of patient volume.

Alongside the hospital, the association supports the local population through various social projects in favor of the sick, the poor, the disabled, children, and mothers. Among them, the St. Theresa School of Angal, which also welcomes children with visual, motor, and intellectual disabilities.
