Sam Culp is one of good guys, one that deserves a chance at life... His charismatic personality and upbeat outlook on life makes him loved by everyone he meets and he has always been one to help someone in need. Whether that help came by providing plumbing services through his business, supporting young athletes so they would stay in sports, or just offering kind words of encouragement to friends and family.
What Sam has lived through medically is nothing short of miraculous! He has survived countless diabetic blood sugar low's and high's that led to trips to the emergency room and hospital stays, kidney failure, a heart attack, triple bypass surgery, and a stroke.
Sam’s fight began in 1985 when he was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. In 2011, after struggling for over 20 years with hospital stays and doctor visits, he was told his kidneys’ were failing and that he needed to start dialysis and began the screening process for a kidney transplant. In Oct of 2013, after a screening stress test found several blockages, he underwent triple bypass surgery. After months of recovery, he was determined to get cleared for surgery and as luck would have it, a private donor was identified! On Sept. 2 2014, he went for another stress test. Within hours of coming home from that test, he suffered a massive hypertensive stroke and was flown to Jefferson University where he fought for his life for weeks. After two months in the hospital then in-patient rehab, he was able to come home. In March, he suffered another setback when he went into cardiac arrest following a sudden blood sugar spike and now has a defibulator. He has been put on an insulin pump to help manage his blood sugar and his doctors are hopeful that one day he can move from in-clinic dialysis to at-home dialysis. A team of doctors are needed to oversee his complex and fragile care while he continues on dialysis, fighting to recover from the stroke, in the hopes that one day he will be strong enough to receive a kidney transplant.
Since the stroke, Sam has been unable to work. With the numerous hospital stays, never-ending doctor & physical therapist appointments, dialysis, and special dietary needs, the family is struggling emotionally and financially.
We are hoping that your support and donations will help Sam and his family with the excessively mounting medical expenses.
