SALMO - An immersion into the life of a salmon

Donation protected
Salmo, an 8-minute, hand-drawn animated short film taking you on the journey of the salmon’s extraordinary life cycle : to make you connect with these amazing creatures, discover the wonders of their aquatic world, and hopefully give you the chills !

The story of Salmo begins somewhere in the mountains of mainland Europe, deep within the swirls of a tranquil river. Nestled within the shadows of its thriving riverside, three intrepid salmons, Salmo, Salma and Salto, are born into the world. They begin their epic adventure for the scrumptious krill, taking them to the confines of the Arctic.

If the salmon thrive, so does our planet.
Although salmon is one of the most widely consumed fish on the planet, its incredible story and aptitudes is very little known to the public. Due to a survival mechanism developed over millions of years, the salmon feed in the open-sea of the Arctic and reproduce in mainland rivers. This journey of thousands of kilometres means the survival of the salmon depends on the quality of all the ecosystems it travels through, making it an indicator species: if the salmon thrive, so does our planet. But in the face of climate change and man’s increased intervention of the natural world, the wild salmon is in a critical state.

Shift the perspective
As humans, we have always relied on storytelling to make sense of the world around us and relate to it; this is why it is vital for us to create new narratives, if we are to protect and preserve the world around us. Salmo hopes to offer an imaginative experiment into the skin of a salmon and bring visibility to this resilient species by following their entire journey underwater. By shifting the perspective to foster empathy and reflect on our own presence in nature, we hope to bring about change, one story at a time.

The team

We have their support
We want to make this film relevant so we consulted some expert scientists and field activists to double check our existing researches and tweak our story while keeping our artistic vision.

What is the plan
To help make the film happen, Paul and La Méridienne put the project up on Proarti, a French crowdfunding platform. We raised 17k which has allowed Paul and Rhoda to animate full time from September to December 2021 as well as financing the design of the soundtrack by Anna and provide all the tools necessary to the team.

During this phase, the story was extended to emphasise the salmon's journey better, increasing the film from 5 to 8 minutes. It was soon realised they needed more help to achieve the quality of animation needed. That's when we decided to turn to Kickstarter. To hire a new animator and adapt to the new 8 minutes length, we need three more months - extending the deadline to March 2022 and adding 10k to the initial budget of 14k.

Unfortunately our focus on making the film drove us away from promoting our film properly on Kickstarter so we didn't make our goal, that's why we are here on Gofundme: to keep our project open to the international crowd, get as much support and exposure as possible for the best future of our film.

We really hope you enjoyed our presentation and will join this epic adventure !
