Hi. My name is Osgur Breatnach. I am seeking funds, on behalf of the Sallinsinquirynow campaign to successfully achieve a public inquiry into Ireland’s controversial Sallins Corruption Case (1976- ).
The case follows my kidnapping, torture and frame-up by the Irish State in the longest criminal case in Irish legal history. I need your support.
TORTURED
I was a 24 -year old journalist at the time I was kidnapped by Irish police in 1976. By the time they had finished with me, I contemplated hanging myself. I was tortured in a tunnel under a police station.
SOLICITOR SAVED MY LIFE
Continually re-detained eight times, in as many days, and held incommunicado and brutalised, I signed an incriminating statement. It was false and concocted by the police. Then they wanted me to incriminate others. In fear and desperation that I might succumb, I contemplated suicide in my cell rather than incriminate other innocent men. The arrival of a solicitor saved my life.
Five trials followed. The last, the longest in Irish legal history, took place in a notorious juryless court.
POLICE IMMUNITY
Amnesty International and thousands of others have called it an unfair trial. A 12-year sentence followed on the inevitable conviction. Two other innocent men followed me into jail. An international campaign resulted in a successful Appeal and the quashing of my conviction and sentence in 1982. But the police were given immunity.
STATE FRAUD
State fraudulent negotiations for compensation were concluded a year later. But not until 2018 did we discover that the Irish DPP (Director of Public Prosecutions) had reviewed the Sallins Case in 1983 and concluded that none of us should have been even charged. INTERNATIONAL BACKING
Despite the advocacy of Amnesty International other human rights organisation and prominent individuals, across the cultural, community and political spectrum, governments refuse to hold an impartial public inquiry. International law under the UN Convention of Human Rights and European HCHR law (European Court of Human Rights) demand such an inquiry.
Although I am now 70 years-old and suffering from Complex Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, I am determined to continue campaigning with family members and others. Over the past 40 years, campaigning on the Sallins Case has secured innocent men’s freedom, some positive legal changes, some financial compensation and a focus on democracy and human rights.
The Sallins Corruption Case highlights the dangers to democracy of the State abandonment of human rights, of ‘political policing’, biased juryless special courts and cover-up.
All funds raised will go to sallinsinquirynow to increase the campaign’s public profile by developing public relations, legal actions and campaign administration.
